The packaged drink recorded in the USDA database declares 3.4 g of added sugars in a 350 ml can, so it is not simply pressed cane. Why does sugarcane juice raise blood glucose so quickly?

Because of what it is mostly made of. A drink dominated by a simple disaccharide reaches the bloodstream faster than the same sugar held inside plant fibre.

Q. Does sugarcane juice contain antioxidants?

It contains phenolic compounds, measured in a laboratory rather than in people. The Molecules analysis put the total phenolic content of the juice at 93 mg GAE per 100 g and identified flavonoids including apigenin, luteolin and vitexin. Those activities were tested in test-tube assays only, with no human or animal work.

Q. How does one glass compare with the daily sugar limit?

The two figures are worth holding together. The trial composition gives 9.1 g of carbohydrate in every 100 g of juice, and the NHS sets the adult free sugars limit at 30 g for a whole day. A tall glass is not a small contribution to that total.

Q. Does boiling or pasteurising make roadside juice safer?

The studies point at the handling rather than the cane. Both Indian studies traced contamination to ice, municipal water, utensils and bare hands, and the Rohtak authors cite foodborne outbreaks linked to unpasteurised juices. Heat treatment addresses only part of a problem that begins with the ice and the glass.

Q. Is sugarcane juice a good drink in hot weather?

The trial is more cautious than the reputation. Its authors limited their rehydration conclusion to exercise in a comfortable environment below 30 degrees Celsius, and they state they could not assess serum electrolyte status at all.
