Alsody is a prescription antioxidant formulation that usually contains alpha lipoic acid 600 mg and superoxide dismutase (SOD) 140 IU in capsule form. Alpha lipoic acid is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound involved in energy metabolism, and SOD is an enzyme that helps neutralise superoxide free radicals. Together, they are intended to reduce oxidative stress in various conditions, particularly those affecting peripheral nerves.
Alsody is generally used as an adjunctive treatment in conditions associated with oxidative stress and neuropathic symptoms, such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy and other forms of nerve pain or tingling. It may help reduce symptoms like burning, numbness, and discomfort in the limbs. Its use should always be based on a doctor’s assessment, and it is not a replacement for primary treatments such as blood sugar control, vitamin replacement, or disease-specific therapies.
Alsody works mainly through its antioxidant components. Alpha lipoic acid can directly scavenge reactive oxygen species and regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. It also acts as a cofactor for mitochondrial enzyme complexes, supporting cellular energy production. Superoxide dismutase converts superoxide radicals into less reactive species, thereby limiting oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA. By reducing oxidative stress, Alsody may help protect nerve cells and improve nerve function over time.
Alsody does not cure diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a chronic complication of long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes, and management focuses on strict glycaemic control, risk factor modification, and symptomatic relief of pain and sensory disturbances. Alsody may provide additional symptomatic benefit in some patients by reducing oxidative stress, but its effect is usually modest and supportive. It should be viewed as an adjunct to, not a replacement for, comprehensive diabetes management and other neuropathy treatments prescribed by a clinician.
Commonly reported side effects with alpha lipoic acid–based products such as Alsody include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, or heartburn), headache, dizziness, and occasionally skin rash or itching. Most adverse effects are mild to moderate and may improve with continued use or after dose adjustment by the prescriber. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention. Any new or persistent symptom after starting Alsody should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
Alsody is often prescribed to people with diabetes, particularly those with peripheral neuropathy, but it must be used cautiously. Alpha lipoic acid can influence glucose metabolism and may enhance insulin sensitivity, which in some individuals can contribute to lower blood glucose levels. Patients taking insulin or oral antidiabetic medicines should monitor their blood glucose regularly when starting Alsody, and their doctor may need to adjust antidiabetic doses. Patients should not change their diabetes medication regimen on their own and should promptly report symptoms of hypoglycaemia such as sweating, tremor, or confusion.
Safety data for the use of alpha lipoic acid and superoxide dismutase combinations such as Alsody in pregnant women are limited. Controlled studies in pregnant humans are lacking, and animal data cannot be directly extrapolated to human pregnancy. Therefore, Alsody should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk and a specialist has specifically recommended it. Pregnant women or those planning to conceive should inform their doctor before starting Alsody so that alternative options can be considered.
There is insufficient information on the excretion of alpha lipoic acid or superoxide dismutase into human breast milk and on their effects on the breastfed infant. Because of this lack of robust safety data, Alsody is generally not recommended during breastfeeding unless a physician judges that the expected benefit to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the infant. If Alsody is used, the infant should be monitored for gastrointestinal disturbances, rash, or unusual behaviour, and any concerns should be reported promptly.
Alsody can interact with other medicines, particularly those that affect blood glucose, such as insulin and oral antidiabetic agents, potentially increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. There are also theoretical or reported interactions with certain chemotherapeutic agents, thyroid hormones, and minerals such as iron or magnesium when taken simultaneously, which may affect absorption. Patients should provide their doctor and pharmacist with a complete list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements before starting Alsody. The timing of doses or the choice of concomitant therapy may need adjustment to minimise interaction risk.
If a dose of Alsody is missed, it should be taken as soon as the patient remembers, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, the missed dose should be skipped and the regular dosing schedule resumed. Two doses should not be taken at the same time or close together to make up for a missed dose, as this may increase the likelihood of side effects without improving efficacy. Patients who frequently forget doses should discuss adherence strategies with their healthcare provider.
Alsody should generally be avoided by individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to alpha lipoic acid, superoxide dismutase, or any excipients in the capsule. Caution or avoidance is also advised in patients with significant hepatic or renal impairment unless a specialist has evaluated the risk–benefit profile. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and adolescents should not use Alsody routinely due to limited safety data. People with poorly controlled diabetes, those prone to hypoglycaemia, and patients on multiple chronic medications should only use Alsody under close medical supervision.
I find medcart really a good farmacy and their service is the most efficient. Highly recommended for reasonably priced medicines
