It plays a crucial role in regulating red blood cell production, known as erythropoiesis. EPO stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. It is used in the treatment of various conditions associated with anemia, such as chronic kidney disease, cancer-related anemia, and certain blood disorders.
