Most side effects are temporary and resolve as your body adapts to the medication. However, if any side effects persist or cause concern, it is important to consult your doctor.

Cardiovascular and blood disorders
Use with cautionAquaviron can increase red blood cell mass, leading to elevated hematocrit and hemoglobin, which may raise the risk of thromboembolic events such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML is an injectable preparation which contains a synthetic form of testosterone (a male sex hormone). It is used in the treatment of male hypogonadism (a condition in which the body does not produce enough testosterone).
No, AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML should not be used for increasing muscle mass and physical ability in healthy individuals, as this may cause harmful effects when used inappropriately. Also, in healthy individuals, if AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML is given externally, it may cause hormonal imbalance.
While some of the effects of AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML may start showing effects after 3 weeks, some may take longer. For example, effect on sexual interest appears after 3 weeks, while changes in erections/ejaculations may take up to 6 months.
AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML should not be given to men with breast cancer, prostate cancer and kidney disease. It should be avoided in patients who had or presently have liver cancer and in those who have increased levels of calcium in blood. It should not be used by females, children below 18 years, and elderly patients more than 65 years of age.
The major health risks associated with the use of AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML in men are heart attack, stroke, and prostatic carcinoma.
You should get blood tests done more frequently for checking your bleeding time (time taken to stop bleeding) when you are taking warfarin along with AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML, especially when starting and stopping AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML. Talk to your doctor for advice.
AQUAVIRON INJECTION 1 ML may decrease blood glucose levels, and therefore, the dose of antidiabetic medicines should be reduced. Consult your doctor for advice.
Aquaviron is a testosterone preparation used as hormone replacement therapy in males with confirmed testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism). It helps restore physiological testosterone levels when the body does not produce enough on its own. Clinically, it may be prescribed for symptoms such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction related to low testosterone, fatigue, decreased muscle mass and strength, low mood, and reduced bone mineral density, provided that laboratory tests confirm low serum testosterone on more than one occasion. It is not intended for normal age‑related decline in testosterone without clear hypogonadism and must only be used under medical supervision.
Aquaviron contains testosterone, which is an androgen hormone. After administration, testosterone binds to androgen receptors in various tissues, including muscle, bone, prostate, and the central nervous system. This binding regulates gene expression and protein synthesis, leading to development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics, increased muscle mass and strength, maintenance of bone density, stimulation of red blood cell production, and support of sexual function and mood. By replacing deficient endogenous testosterone, Aquaviron aims to restore these physiological functions to within a normal range.
Aquaviron should not be used by men with known or suspected prostate cancer or male breast cancer, as testosterone can potentially stimulate the growth of hormone‑sensitive tumors. It is also contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to testosterone or any component of the formulation, and generally avoided in patients with severe heart, liver, or kidney disease unless a specialist considers it absolutely necessary. Aquaviron is not indicated for women, children, or adolescents except in very specific circumstances under specialist care. It should not be used for bodybuilding, athletic performance enhancement, or weight gain in otherwise healthy individuals.
Aquaviron injection is intended to be administered by a trained healthcare professional, usually by deep intramuscular injection. Technique, injection site selection, and aseptic precautions are important to reduce the risk of complications such as infection, nerve injury, or incorrect administration. Some patients may be trained to self‑inject certain testosterone formulations, but this should only occur if the prescribing physician explicitly approves and provides proper training. Patients should never attempt to inject Aquaviron on their own without clear medical instruction and ongoing supervision.
Common side effects of Aquaviron and other testosterone therapies include acne, oily skin, increased body or facial hair, mild fluid retention, weight gain, mood changes such as irritability, increased red blood cell count (which may be seen as elevated hematocrit or hemoglobin), and local injection‑site reactions like pain, redness, or swelling. Some men may experience breast enlargement or tenderness (gynecomastia), changes in libido, or mild sleep disturbances. Many of these effects are dose‑related and may improve with dose adjustment or treatment interruption, but any persistent or bothersome symptoms should be discussed with the prescribing doctor.
Yes. Although many patients tolerate testosterone replacement well when appropriately monitored, Aquaviron can be associated with serious risks. These include worsening of pre‑existing prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia, increased risk of blood clots due to elevated red blood cell mass (polycythemia), potential cardiovascular events in susceptible individuals, worsening of sleep apnea, and significant fluid retention in patients with heart, liver, or kidney disease. Testosterone therapy can also suppress sperm production and may impair fertility. Any symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden leg swelling, severe headache, vision changes, or difficulty urinating require urgent medical evaluation.
Testosterone therapy, including Aquaviron, can suppress the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑gonadal axis, leading to reduced secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle‑stimulating hormone. This suppression can decrease intratesticular testosterone levels and impair spermatogenesis, potentially reducing sperm count and fertility. For this reason, Aquaviron is generally not recommended for men who are actively trying to conceive in the near term. If fertility is a priority, alternative approaches such as gonadotropin therapy may be considered. Men should discuss their reproductive plans with their doctor before starting Aquaviron.
Aquaviron is not routinely indicated for use in women. Testosterone exposure in women can cause virilizing effects such as deepening of the voice, increased facial and body hair, acne, menstrual irregularities, and clitoral enlargement, some of which may be irreversible. In very specific clinical situations, low‑dose testosterone may be considered in women under specialist supervision, but this is separate from typical Aquaviron use. Aquaviron should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the risk of masculinization of a female fetus and potential adverse effects on the nursing infant.
Patients on Aquaviron usually require regular clinical and laboratory monitoring. This often includes serum testosterone levels to ensure they remain within the target range, complete blood count to monitor hematocrit and hemoglobin for polycythemia, liver function tests, lipid profile, and fasting glucose if indicated. In adult men, prostate‑specific antigen testing and digital rectal examination are recommended at baseline and periodically thereafter, especially in those over middle age or with risk factors for prostate disease. Blood pressure, body weight, and symptom assessment should also be reviewed at follow‑up visits. The frequency of monitoring is determined by the treating physician.
Yes. Testosterone can interact with several medications. It may enhance the effect of oral anticoagulants such as warfarin, potentially increasing bleeding risk, and can alter the requirements for insulin or oral antidiabetic drugs by affecting glucose metabolism. Concomitant use with systemic corticosteroids or drugs that cause fluid retention may increase the risk of edema, particularly in patients with heart, liver, or kidney disease. Aquaviron may also influence the metabolism of certain drugs via hepatic enzyme modulation. Patients should inform their doctor about all prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, and herbal supplements they are taking before starting Aquaviron.
Aquaviron is generally not recommended solely for age‑related decline in testosterone in the absence of clear clinical hypogonadism and documented low serum testosterone on repeated testing. The benefit‑risk balance of testosterone therapy in older men with borderline levels remains uncertain, and there may be increased risks of cardiovascular events, prostate‑related issues, and polycythemia. Any consideration of therapy in this context should be individualized, based on a thorough evaluation of symptoms, comorbidities, and alternative explanations for fatigue, low mood, or sexual dysfunction. Non‑pharmacological measures and treatment of underlying conditions should be optimized before considering Aquaviron.
