Most side effects are temporary and resolve as your body gets used to the medication. If any side effects persist or cause concern, please consult your doctor.

Heart and QT Prolongation
Use with special cautionHydroxyzine has been associated with QT interval prolongation and, rarely, serious ventricular arrhythmias such as torsades de pointes, particularly in patients with pre-existing risk factors.
ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines, which means it is an anti-allergy medicine. It is used to treat various allergic skin conditions (e.g., eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash). ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S effectively reduces symptoms such as swelling, itching and redness associated with such conditions. It also helps relieve excessive anxiety or worry in people who are supposed to undergo a surgery or have recently undergone a surgery. It calms the brain and makes such people feel better.
ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S is safe if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Take it exactly as directed and do not skip any dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and let your doctor know if any of the side effects bother you.
ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S works by decreasing the inflammation caused by allergies. It reduces inflammation by blocking the release of a natural chemical in our body, called histamine, that causes allergic symptoms such as swelling, redness and pain.
If you forget a dose of ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose in the prescribed time. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one as this may increase the chances of developing side effects.
ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S is effective if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Do not stop taking it even if you see improvement in your condition. If you stop using ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S too early, the symptoms may return or worsen.
No, do not stop taking ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S without consulting your doctor even if you are feeling better. Your symptoms may improve before the condition is completely cured. Therefore, for better and complete treatment, it is advised to continue your treatment for the prescribed duration.
Before starting treatment with ATARAX 10MG TABLET 15'S, tell your doctor if you have any other health problems, like kidney, heart or liver-related issues. This is because certain medical conditions may affect your treatment and you may even need dose modifications. Let your doctor know about all the other medicines you are taking because they may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. If you have had an allergic reaction to any similar medicine earlier, tell your doctor before starting your treatment. Inform your doctor if you are planning a baby, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Atarax 10 mg contains hydroxyzine hydrochloride, a first-generation antihistamine with sedative and anxiolytic properties. It is commonly used for the symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension, for the management of itching associated with allergic conditions such as urticaria and certain forms of dermatitis, and in some cases as a sedative premedication before medical or surgical procedures. The exact indication for an individual patient should be determined by a healthcare professional.
Hydroxyzine, the active ingredient in Atarax 10 mg, primarily works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, which reduces the effects of histamine involved in allergic reactions and itching. It also has activity on certain serotonin and muscarinic receptors in the central nervous system, contributing to its sedative and anxiolytic effects. Because it crosses the blood–brain barrier, it can cause drowsiness and a calming effect, which is why it is sometimes used for short-term management of anxiety and for preoperative sedation.
Atarax 10 mg tablets should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. They are usually taken by mouth with a glass of water and can be taken with or without food. The dose, frequency, and duration of treatment depend on your age, medical condition, and the reason for which the medicine has been prescribed. Do not change your dose, take extra tablets, or use the medicine for longer than recommended without consulting your healthcare professional. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, ask your doctor or pharmacist about alternative formulations that may be available in your region.
Yes. Atarax 10 mg is a sedating antihistamine and commonly causes drowsiness, fatigue, or a feeling of being less alert. These effects may be more pronounced at the start of treatment, after dose increases, in older adults, or when taken with other medicines that depress the central nervous system, such as benzodiazepines, opioids, or alcohol. Because of this, you should avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require full mental alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
Hydroxyzine is not classified as a controlled substance and is generally not considered addictive in the way that benzodiazepines or opioids can be. However, any medicine that produces sedation or relief of anxiety has the potential for psychological dependence in some individuals. Atarax should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary, under medical supervision. If you feel you are relying on it more than prescribed, or if you are concerned about dependence, discuss this with your doctor.
Alcohol should generally be avoided while taking Atarax 10 mg. Both alcohol and hydroxyzine depress the central nervous system, and using them together can increase drowsiness, dizziness, impaired coordination, and the risk of accidents. In some individuals, the combination may also increase the risk of respiratory depression. If you have consumed alcohol, do not take extra doses of Atarax, and speak with your healthcare professional about safe use in your specific situation.
Use of hydroxyzine during pregnancy requires careful assessment by a healthcare professional. Hydroxyzine crosses the placenta, and data in humans are limited. Some guidelines advise avoiding its use, particularly during the first trimester, unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, you should inform your doctor before starting Atarax 10 mg. Do not start or continue this medicine during pregnancy without medical advice.
Hydroxyzine is excreted into breast milk, and there is a potential for sedation, irritability, or feeding difficulties in the breastfed infant. For this reason, many references recommend avoiding hydroxyzine during breastfeeding or using it only if clearly needed and for the shortest possible duration, with close monitoring of the infant. Your doctor may consider alternative treatments with a more favorable safety profile in lactation. Always discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare professional before using Atarax while breastfeeding.
Common side effects of Atarax 10 mg include drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, and sometimes blurred vision or mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, constipation, or stomach discomfort. Many of these effects are related to its antihistaminic and anticholinergic properties. Most side effects are mild and may lessen as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, if you experience severe drowsiness, confusion, palpitations, fainting, difficulty breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or wheezing, seek medical attention immediately.
Atarax 10 mg should generally be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, levocetirizine, or any component of the formulation. It is usually contraindicated in patients with a history of significant QT interval prolongation, certain cardiac arrhythmias, or in those taking specific medicines known to markedly prolong the QT interval, unless a specialist has carefully assessed the risk. Caution or dose adjustment is required in older adults, in patients with liver or kidney impairment, in those with glaucoma, urinary retention, or severe prostatic hypertrophy, and in people with conditions that may be worsened by anticholinergic effects. Always provide your full medical history to your doctor before starting Atarax.
If you miss a dose of Atarax 10 mg, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If it is close to the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects such as excessive drowsiness or cardiac effects. If you frequently forget doses, speak with your healthcare professional about strategies to improve adherence or whether a different treatment might be more suitable.
