Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

General precautions and comorbid conditions
Use with medical guidanceAvil has anticholinergic properties and should be used cautiously in patients with conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, or certain gastrointestinal motility disorders.
Yes, paracetamol can be taken with AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S. They are used together in conditions when the patient has a fever along with symptoms of allergy (like running nose, tearing of eyes etc).
AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S has strong sleep-inducing effects. It is therefore not prescribed if a person is involved in any work that requires mental alertness.
No, AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S is not known to cause weight loss.
No, AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S and Chlorpheniramine are not same. They are similar in chemical structure and both are older antihistaminics. AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S does not contain chlorine in it whereas Chlorpheniramine does. However, both are used in the treatment of allergic conditions.
Yes, vitamin C has a role in improving the immunity so it is given with AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S for relieving the symptoms of common cold. No drug-drug interactions or any harmful effects have been reported when they are used together.
AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S does not cause an increase in blood pressure. Please consult your doctor if you have increased blood pressure after taking AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S as it would require proper diagnosis and treatment.
No, AVIL 50MG TABLET 15'S is not a steroid. It is an antihistaminic medicine used in the treatment of some allergic conditions.
Avil is a brand of antihistamine medicine containing pheniramine maleate as its active ingredient. It belongs to the first-generation H1 antihistamines and is used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, urticaria (hives), and other allergic skin reactions. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released during allergic responses, thereby reducing symptoms like itching, redness, swelling, and runny nose.
Avil is commonly prescribed for the symptomatic relief of various allergic conditions. These include seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny or blocked nose, nasal itching), allergic conjunctivitis (red, itchy, watery eyes), urticaria (hives) and other pruritic skin disorders, insect bite reactions, and certain drug-induced allergic manifestations. In some cases, it may be used as an adjunct in upper respiratory tract infections where histamine-mediated symptoms are prominent. It is not a cure for the underlying allergy but helps control the symptoms.
Avil contains pheniramine, which is a first-generation H1 receptor antagonist. During an allergic reaction, the body releases histamine, which binds to H1 receptors in various tissues, leading to vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, itching, redness, and increased mucus secretion. By competitively blocking these H1 receptors, pheniramine reduces the effects of histamine and alleviates allergy symptoms. Because it crosses the blood–brain barrier, it also acts on central H1 receptors, which contributes to its sedative and drowsiness-inducing effects.
Yes, drowsiness is a very common side effect of Avil because pheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that readily crosses into the central nervous system. Many people experience sedation, reduced alertness, and sometimes dizziness after taking it. The degree of drowsiness can vary between individuals. Patients are advised not to drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks requiring full mental alertness until they know how the medicine affects them. Concomitant use of alcohol or other sedative medicines can significantly increase this drowsiness.
Avil should be combined with other allergy medicines only under medical supervision. Using it together with other sedating antihistamines or central nervous system depressants (such as certain sleep aids, anxiolytics, or opioid pain medicines) can increase the risk of excessive sedation, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Non-sedating second-generation antihistamines are sometimes preferred for daytime use. Your doctor will decide whether Avil can be used alone or in combination, based on your symptoms, other medications, and overall health status.
Avil may be used in children when specifically prescribed by a pediatrician, who will determine the appropriate dose and formulation based on the child’s age, weight, and clinical condition. First-generation antihistamines like pheniramine can cause pronounced sedation, irritability, or paradoxical excitation in children. Accidental overdose can be dangerous and may lead to serious side effects such as severe drowsiness, agitation, seizures, or heart rhythm disturbances. Caregivers should never give Avil to a child without medical advice and should keep the medicine out of reach of children.
Use of Avil during pregnancy should be based on a careful risk–benefit assessment by a doctor. Human data on pheniramine use in pregnancy are limited, and although no consistent pattern of major birth defects has been established, first-generation antihistamines are generally used with caution. If allergy symptoms are significant, the doctor may consider safer alternatives or the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration. Pregnant women should not self-medicate with Avil and should always consult their obstetrician or healthcare provider before using it.
Pheniramine may pass into breast milk in small amounts. Because first-generation antihistamines can cause sedation and irritability in breastfed infants and may potentially reduce milk production at higher doses, Avil should be used with caution during breastfeeding. A healthcare professional will weigh the benefits of treating the mother’s symptoms against potential risks to the infant and may recommend alternative, less sedating antihistamines. If Avil is used, the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration is preferred, and the infant should be monitored for unusual drowsiness, poor feeding, or irritability.
Common side effects of Avil include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and sometimes difficulty in urination, especially in individuals with prostate enlargement or urinary tract obstruction. Some people may also experience headache, nausea, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort. These effects are usually dose-related and may lessen as the body adjusts to the medicine. However, if side effects are severe, persistent, or accompanied by symptoms such as palpitations, confusion, breathing difficulty, or severe rash, medical attention should be sought immediately.
Avil should generally be avoided or used only with strict medical supervision in certain groups. These include individuals with known hypersensitivity to pheniramine or other antihistamines, those with narrow-angle glaucoma, severe urinary retention or significant prostate enlargement, severe liver or kidney impairment, certain heart rhythm disorders, and those with a history of seizures. Elderly patients are more susceptible to sedation, confusion, and anticholinergic side effects and require particular caution. People who regularly consume alcohol or take other sedative medicines should also use Avil only under medical guidance.
If you are taking Avil on a regular schedule and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this increases the risk of side effects such as excessive drowsiness, confusion, or anticholinergic effects. If you are unsure how to proceed, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
