Composition
Common: marked drowsiness or sedation, dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred vision. A stinging or burning sensation can occur at the injection site. Others: difficulty passing urine, nausea, and, particularly in children, occasional paradoxical excitement or agitation. Serious (seek medical attention): a fall in blood pressure (especially if given into a vein too quickly), difficulty breathing or slowed breathing (particularly if combined with other sedatives), a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. These are managed by the treating medical team.
It is administered by a doctor or nurse — into a muscle, under the skin, or slowly into a vein. When given into a vein it is injected slowly (over about a minute) to avoid a sudden drop in blood pressure. You do not self-administer it.
Pheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine that enters the brain, so drowsiness and sedation are expected and can be strong. After receiving it, avoid driving, operating machinery, or any task needing alertness until the effect fully wears off.
You should not consume alcohol around the time of treatment, and the medical team will be cautious about combining it with other sedatives, sleep or anxiety medicines, or strong painkillers, as these add to drowsiness and can slow breathing. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Tell your doctor if you have asthma or other breathing problems, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, heart disease, epilepsy, or liver problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is used carefully in young children and the elderly.
Because it is injected, it acts quickly to relieve acute allergic symptoms — which is why it is used in urgent situations. The effect, along with drowsiness, lasts several hours.
