Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

General usage precautions
generalUse Betadine vaginal pessaries only as directed by your doctor or according to the official patient information leaflet for the specific product you have.
BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S can be used as an antiseptic to treat or prevent infections in wounds such as ulcers, small burns or cuts, and other minor injuries. However, take special care if you are applying BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S on open large wounds or where the skin is broken like burns. The reason being there may be a risk of excessive absorption of iodine in the blood which may increase to toxic levels.
BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S has a natural golden brown color which stains the area where you have applied it. It does not however, permanently stain your skin and fingernails. The stain can be easily removed from your clothes with soap and water.
BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S is used in the treatment and prevention of infection in wounds including cuts, small areas of burn, ulcers and minor injuries. Do not use this medicine on deep wounds and clean surgical wounds.
Clean the affected area and apply a small amount of the medicine to it. You can then cover it with a sterile bandage. You can apply this medicine 1 to 3 times daily. However, do not use it for longer than 1 week.
Using BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S over a large area or for a long time may sometimes cause problems with your thyroid. Symptoms of thyroid dysfunction include weight loss, increased appetite, sweating, lack of energy, and weight gain. If you notice such symptoms, contact your doctor who may advise you to stop using BETADINE VAGINAL PESSARIES 200MG TABLET 10'S.
Betadine vaginal pessaries are used as a local antiseptic treatment in the vagina to help manage and prevent infections caused by a wide range of microorganisms, including many bacteria and fungi such as Candida species. They are often used for non-specific vaginitis, mixed infections, or when the vaginal flora is significantly disturbed and associated with symptoms like abnormal discharge, odor, itching, or irritation. They are not a substitute for a full medical evaluation, especially if symptoms are severe, recurrent, or associated with pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding.
Betadine vaginal pessaries contain povidone-iodine, an antiseptic that slowly releases iodine. Iodine has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and can kill or inactivate many bacteria, fungi, and some viruses by disrupting their proteins and cell structures. When the pessary is inserted into the vagina, it dissolves and releases povidone-iodine, which acts locally on the vaginal mucosa. This helps reduce the number of pathogenic microorganisms and supports the resolution of infection-related symptoms. The effect is local rather than systemic, but some iodine absorption through the mucosa can occur.
Use of Betadine vaginal pessaries during pregnancy should only occur under the supervision and recommendation of a healthcare professional. Povidone-iodine can be absorbed through the vaginal mucosa, and iodine can cross the placenta and potentially affect fetal thyroid function, especially with repeated or prolonged use. Because of this, many guidelines advise caution or prefer alternative treatments with better-established safety profiles in pregnancy. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, do not start Betadine vaginal pessaries on your own; consult your doctor or midwife for an appropriate evaluation and treatment plan.
Caution is advised when using Betadine vaginal pessaries during breastfeeding. Iodine from povidone-iodine can be absorbed and may pass into breast milk, potentially affecting the thyroid function of a nursing infant, particularly with repeated or long-term use. In many cases, alternative treatments with more established safety data in breastfeeding may be preferred. If you are breastfeeding, discuss your symptoms and treatment options with your doctor, who can weigh the benefits and potential risks and decide whether Betadine vaginal pessaries are appropriate for your situation and for how long they may be used.
There is no direct interaction known between alcohol consumption and the local vaginal use of Betadine pessaries, because the medication primarily acts on the vaginal mucosa and is not intended to have significant systemic effects. However, heavy alcohol use can impair immune function and may indirectly affect how your body responds to infections. It is generally advisable to limit alcohol intake when you are being treated for any infection. If you have liver disease or are taking other medications that interact with alcohol, follow your doctor’s advice regarding alcohol consumption during treatment.
Betadine vaginal pessaries act locally in the vagina and are not known to impair alertness, coordination, or reaction time. They are not expected to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you experience unusual systemic symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, or any unexpected reaction after using the pessary, you should avoid driving or operating machines until you feel well again and seek medical advice. In routine use, however, no specific driving restrictions are generally required.
Betadine vaginal pessaries are used locally, and systemic absorption of iodine from povidone-iodine is usually limited when used for short periods. They are not primarily metabolized by the liver in the same way as many oral medications. However, in people with significant liver disease, overall drug handling and general health may be altered, and infections may behave differently. While no specific liver-related contraindication is usually listed for short-term local use, it is still advisable for patients with moderate to severe liver disease to consult their doctor before using Betadine vaginal pessaries, especially if repeated or prolonged treatment is being considered.
Some iodine from povidone-iodine can be absorbed through the vaginal mucosa and is eventually eliminated from the body, partly via the kidneys. In people with severe kidney impairment, the handling and excretion of iodine may be altered. Although short-term local use is unlikely to cause problems in most patients, those with moderate to severe kidney disease should use Betadine vaginal pessaries only after medical advice. Your doctor can assess your kidney function, overall medication list, and infection severity to decide whether this treatment is suitable and for what duration.
If you have a known allergy to iodine, povidone-iodine, or any of the other ingredients in the pessary, you should not use Betadine vaginal pessaries. Allergic reactions can include itching, burning, redness, swelling, rash, or more severe reactions in rare cases. People with very sensitive skin or a history of contact dermatitis may be more prone to local irritation. If you experience intense burning, pain, or a rash after insertion, remove any remaining product if possible, avoid further use, and seek medical advice promptly. Always inform your healthcare provider about any allergies or previous reactions to antiseptics or vaginal products before starting treatment.
Povidone-iodine can release iodine that may be absorbed through the vaginal mucosa, especially with repeated or prolonged use. Excess iodine exposure can, in some cases, affect thyroid function, particularly in people with pre-existing thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, nodular goiter, or autoimmune thyroid disease. For this reason, individuals with known thyroid problems should use Betadine vaginal pessaries only under medical supervision, and long-term or frequent courses should generally be avoided unless specifically advised by a doctor. If you notice symptoms such as unexplained weight changes, palpitations, heat or cold intolerance, or neck swelling, inform your healthcare provider.
Use during menstruation is generally not preferred because menstrual blood can dilute and wash away the antiseptic, potentially reducing its local effectiveness. In addition, insertion may be less comfortable, and it can be more difficult to assess changes in discharge or symptoms. Some product leaflets advise postponing treatment until after menstruation when possible. However, if your doctor has specifically instructed you to continue treatment during your period, follow their advice. Do not use tampons at the same time as a pessary, as they may absorb the medication and reduce its effect; sanitary pads are usually recommended instead.
