How BETNOVATE SKIN CREAM 20 GM Works

• Betamethasone valerate passes into the inflamed skin and acts on several parts of the inflammatory process. It reduces the number of mast cells, the cells that release histamine. It slows the arrival of eosinophils and other immune cells, lowers the production of the chemical messengers that drive inflammation, and blocks the breakdown of arachidonic acid into inflammatory substances.
• It also narrows small blood vessels in the skin. Together these actions reduce redness, swelling and itching.

Itching and a burning or painful feeling at the application site are the most commonly reported effects. Allergic contact dermatitis, redness, rash and hives are reported in fewer than 1 in 10,000 people, and they can look like the original skin problem getting worse. Using a potent steroid for too long, over a large area, under a covering or on thin skin can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels, colour changes and extra hair growth. The face and skin folds are most at risk. Enough steroid can be absorbed through the skin to affect the whole body, particularly in children. This can suppress the body's own cortisol production and cause Cushing-like features such as a rounded face and weight gain, as well as raised blood sugar, raised blood pressure and, in children, slowed growth. Blurred vision or other visual changes should be reported, since cataract and glaucoma have been linked to corticosteroids.

• Store the tube at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep the cap closed and the tube out of the reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date on the pack.

• Apply a thin layer only, just enough to cover the affected area
• Do not use it on a rash that might be a fungal infection until a doctor has checked it
• Do not use it on acne, rosacea or as a skin-lightening cream
• Avoid long use on the face and in skin folds
• Do not cover the area with a bandage unless the doctor advises it
• Keep using a moisturiser as advised once the flare has settled
• See the doctor if there is no improvement within two to four weeks
• Keep away from flames, since fabric soaked with the cream burns easily
