Bexol tablet, containing trihexyphenidyl (benzhexol), is primarily used to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as muscle stiffness, rigidity, tremor, and slowed movements. It is also used to treat certain drug‑induced movement disorders (extrapyramidal symptoms) caused by antipsychotic or other medicines, including acute dystonia, parkinsonism, and sometimes akathisia, when considered appropriate by a physician.
In Parkinson’s disease there is a relative deficiency of dopamine and an excess of acetylcholine activity in specific brain regions that control movement. Bexol (trihexyphenidyl) blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, reducing cholinergic overactivity and helping to rebalance dopamine and acetylcholine. This mechanism can improve tremor, muscle stiffness, and some other motor symptoms, although it does not stop disease progression.
Bexol tablet does not cure Parkinson’s disease. It is a symptomatic treatment that helps control certain motor symptoms, particularly tremor and rigidity. The underlying neurodegenerative process continues, so long‑term management usually involves a combination of medicines, physical therapy, and regular monitoring by a neurologist. Bexol is typically used as an adjunct to other antiparkinsonian drugs rather than as sole therapy in most patients.
Yes. Bexol tablet is commonly used to treat extrapyramidal symptoms caused by antipsychotic and some other medicines. These may include acute dystonic reactions (such as neck twisting, jaw spasms, or oculogyric crisis), drug‑induced parkinsonism (tremor, rigidity, slowed movements), and in some cases akathisia (a feeling of inner restlessness with an urge to move). The decision to use Bexol for these conditions must be made by a doctor after assessing the risks and benefits and considering adjustment of the causative drug.
You should not start Bexol tablet on your own for tremors or any other symptom. Tremor can have many causes, including essential tremor, anxiety, thyroid disease, medication effects, and Parkinson’s disease. Bexol is specifically indicated for Parkinsonian and certain drug‑induced tremors and carries significant anticholinergic side effects. A doctor must evaluate the cause of your tremor and decide whether Bexol is appropriate, safe, and necessary in your case.
Common side effects of Bexol tablet include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, decreased sweating, dizziness, light‑headedness, and difficulty passing urine. Some people may experience nervousness, confusion, or mild memory problems, especially at higher doses or in older adults. These effects are related to its anticholinergic action. If side effects are troublesome or persistent, you should contact your doctor for review.
Bexol tablet should be avoided or used with great caution in people with narrow‑angle glaucoma, urinary retention, severe prostate enlargement, bowel obstruction, severe ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, or significant cognitive impairment. Caution is also required in elderly patients, and in those with heart disease, arrhythmias, liver or kidney impairment, or a history of seizures. Your doctor will review your medical history and other medicines before prescribing Bexol.
Yes. Bexol can cause blurred vision and difficulty focusing, particularly for near tasks, due to its anticholinergic effect on the eye muscles. It may also increase intraocular pressure and can worsen or precipitate narrow‑angle glaucoma. People with known or suspected glaucoma should inform their doctor before starting Bexol. Any sudden eye pain, redness, halos around lights, or sudden vision changes require urgent medical attention.
Stopping Bexol tablet abruptly without medical advice is not recommended. Sudden discontinuation can lead to worsening of Parkinsonian symptoms or recurrence of drug‑induced movement disorders. In some cases, abrupt withdrawal may cause rebound effects such as increased rigidity or tremor. If your doctor decides that Bexol should be stopped, the dose is usually reduced gradually while monitoring your symptoms.
Bexol tablet is often used in combination with other Parkinson’s medicines such as levodopa or dopamine agonists. The combination can provide better control of symptoms, especially tremor. However, combining multiple medicines increases the risk of side effects and drug interactions. Your neurologist will determine the appropriate treatment regimen and adjust doses based on your response, age, and tolerance. You should not change or add medicines without consulting your doctor.
Bexol tablet can cause dizziness, blurred vision, and sometimes drowsiness or confusion, which may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Until you know how the medicine affects you, you should avoid driving, cycling, or performing tasks that require clear vision and full alertness. If you experience persistent visual disturbances, confusion, or significant dizziness, inform your doctor promptly.
