• Elobixibat blocks the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) in the last part of the small intestine, which normally reabsorbs bile acids back into the body.
• With this reabsorption reduced, more bile acids pass onward into the large intestine (colon).
• In the colon these bile acids draw water into the bowel and stimulate its natural movement, which softens the stool and helps it move along more easily.
