Calpol is a brand of medicine that contains paracetamol, used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. It is commonly given for headaches, toothache, sore throat, earache, muscle aches, pains associated with colds and flu, and fever after vaccinations, especially in children. Always follow the instructions on the pack or those given by your doctor or pharmacist.
Calpol is widely used and considered safe for children when given at the correct dose and interval according to age and body weight. You must use the specific Calpol formulation intended for your child’s age group and follow the dosing instructions on the package leaflet. Never give more than the recommended total amount in 24 hours, and do not give Calpol together with other medicines that contain paracetamol. If you are unsure about the correct dose or your child has underlying health problems, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use.
People with liver disease, a history of liver damage, or those who regularly drink large amounts of alcohol must use Calpol (paracetamol) with great caution. Paracetamol is processed mainly by the liver, and overdose or prolonged high‑dose use can cause serious liver injury. If you have any liver condition, you should not take Calpol without medical advice. Your doctor may recommend a lower total daily amount, longer intervals between doses, or an alternative medicine. Never exceed the maximum daily amount stated on the product label, and seek urgent medical help if you suspect you have taken too much.
In people with kidney impairment, paracetamol can usually be used, but dosing intervals or total daily amounts may need adjustment depending on the severity of kidney disease. Because Calpol products are designed for the general population, they may not be suitable without modification in moderate to severe kidney problems. If you have chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis, or have a history of kidney impairment, consult your doctor before using Calpol. Your healthcare provider can advise on whether it is appropriate for you and how often you can safely take it.
Paracetamol is generally considered the first‑choice medicine for treating pain and fever during pregnancy when non‑drug measures are not sufficient. Calpol may be used in pregnancy if clearly needed, but only at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time and under medical guidance. Long‑term or high‑dose use without medical supervision is not recommended. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor or midwife before taking Calpol so they can confirm that it is appropriate for your situation and help you balance benefits and potential risks.
Paracetamol passes into breast milk in very small amounts and is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding. Calpol can usually be taken by breastfeeding mothers for short‑term relief of pain or fever, provided the recommended dose and frequency are not exceeded. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration, and avoid combining Calpol with other paracetamol‑containing medicines. If your baby was born prematurely, has liver or kidney problems, or if you need to use pain relief regularly, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before taking Calpol.
Calpol contains paracetamol, which does not usually cause drowsiness or impair concentration. Most people can drive or operate machinery safely after taking Calpol at recommended doses. However, if your underlying illness (such as high fever, severe pain, or infection) makes you feel dizzy, weak, or less alert, you should avoid driving or using machines until you feel better. If you notice any unusual side effects such as dizziness or confusion after taking Calpol, do not drive and seek medical advice.
It is advisable to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking Calpol. Both alcohol and paracetamol are processed by the liver, and drinking alcohol, especially in large amounts or regularly, can increase the risk of liver damage from paracetamol. If you drink alcohol, keep your intake low and never exceed the maximum daily amount of paracetamol stated on the Calpol packaging. People who drink heavily or have alcohol‑related liver disease should seek medical advice before using Calpol.
Do not take Calpol if you have ever had an allergic reaction to paracetamol or to any of the other ingredients listed in the product leaflet. Signs of an allergic reaction can include rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or sudden dizziness. This can be serious and may require urgent medical attention. Some Calpol formulations may also contain flavorings, colorants, sweeteners, or preservatives that can cause reactions in sensitive individuals. Always read the ingredients list carefully, and if you are unsure whether a product is safe for you or your child, ask a pharmacist or doctor before use.
Taking more Calpol than recommended can cause serious liver damage, which may not cause symptoms immediately. Early signs of overdose can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or feeling generally unwell, but symptoms can be mild at first. If you or your child may have taken more than the recommended amount of Calpol, or if you have accidentally taken multiple products containing paracetamol, seek emergency medical help immediately, even if you feel well. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Early treatment in hospital is critical to reduce the risk of severe liver injury.
Calpol should not be taken together with other medicines that contain paracetamol, as this increases the risk of accidental overdose. Always check the labels of cold and flu remedies, painkillers, and combination products to see if they contain paracetamol. Certain medicines that affect the liver, such as some anti‑seizure drugs or tuberculosis treatments, may also influence how paracetamol is processed. If you or your child are taking any regular prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, or herbal supplements, consult a doctor or pharmacist before using Calpol to ensure there are no important interactions or duplicate ingredients.
