Common, especially when starting or increasing the dose (usually mild and settling within days to weeks): nausea, headache, dizziness or lightheadedness, tiredness, and constipation. A drop in blood pressure on standing can cause faintness.Serious (seek medical attention): impulse-control problems such as compulsive gambling, shopping, eating, or increased sexual urges (a known effect of dopamine agonists — tell your doctor if these develop); sudden episodes of falling asleep; persistent shortness of breath or swelling (rare heart-valve or fibrosis changes with long-term higher doses); severe or persistent headache, vision changes, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Take it exactly as prescribed. For high prolactin it is usually taken twice a week (not daily), often with food to reduce nausea, on the same days each week. For lactation suppression the dosing is different and short-term. Do not change the dose or schedule on your own — your doctor adjusts it based on your prolactin levels.
Cabergoline is very long-acting, so a couple of doses a week is enough to keep prolactin controlled. Taking it with food and at bedtime can help reduce nausea and dizziness.
For hyperprolactinaemia it is often taken for months to years, with periodic blood tests to check prolactin. Your doctor may lower or stop it once levels stay normal. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Tell your doctor if you notice new compulsive behaviours (gambling, spending, sexual urges), daytime sleep attacks, breathlessness, swelling, chest pain, or persistent nausea/dizziness. Stand up slowly to avoid faintness, and be cautious driving until you know how it affects you.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Cabergoline is sometimes stopped once pregnancy is confirmed, and it is not suitable for mothers who wish to breastfeed (as it suppresses milk). Also avoid it with certain anti-nausea/antipsychotic medicines that block dopamine, as they reduce its effect.
