Most side effects are temporary and disappear as your body gets used to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they continue or cause concern.

Allergies
Contraindicated in severe allergy to componentsChirorab vaccine should not be given to individuals with a known history of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any component of the vaccine or to a previous rabies vaccine dose, unless the risk of rabies exposure is judged to outweigh the risk of reaction and vaccination is performed under strict medical supervision.
The rabies virus is transmitted in the saliva of infected animals. People usually become infected with the virus if they get bitten by an infected animal. However, any contact with the saliva of an infected animal (alive or dead) can potentially lead to rabies infection if the person has an opening in the skin or the saliva gets into their eyes, nose or mouth.
Rabies is a 100% preventable disease. Proper wound management and simultaneous administration of CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML combined with rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is considered invariably effective in preventing rabies, even after high-risk exposure.
The rabies virus attacks the nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The first symptoms of rabies are similar to a flu-like illness which can be identified as fever, headache and general discomfort. Within days, the disease can progress to symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, agitation, abnormal behavior, delirium and hallucinations.
Rabies vaccine is recommended for persons in high-risk occupational groups, such as veterinarians and their staff, animal handlers, rabies researchers and certain laboratory workers. International travelers who are likely to come in contact with animals in areas where cases of dog rabies are common. People should remain cautious and must get CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML, especially if they will have limited access to appropriate medical care in such areas.
Yes, CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML can be taken by a pregnant woman. Cases of any fetal abnormalities in pregnant women have not been reported with the use of CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML. The doctor may even suggest routine pre-exposure vaccination against rabies if the risk of exposure is high.
Most of the side effects of CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML are mild, such as soreness and redness at the injection site. Moderate problems, including hives, pain in the joints and fever, are possible in a small percentage of patients (6%) who are given booster doses.
CHIRORAB VACCINE 1 ML is not recommended for routine use in the general population. It should not be used if a person is moderately or severely ill. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor.
Chirorab vaccine is used to help prevent rabies infection in humans. It is given as pre‑exposure prophylaxis to people at higher risk of contact with rabid animals, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, and certain travelers, and as part of post‑exposure prophylaxis after a bite, scratch, or other potential exposure to a suspected rabid animal. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies that protect against the rabies virus.
Yes. Chirorab vaccine is commonly used as part of post‑exposure prophylaxis after a dog or other animal bite that may carry a risk of rabies. Treatment usually includes immediate and thorough washing of the wound with soap and water, followed by vaccination according to a recommended schedule. In many cases, especially if the person has never been vaccinated against rabies before, rabies immunoglobulin may also be required. The exact regimen and timing are decided by a healthcare professional based on the type of exposure and local guidelines.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, so preventing infection is critical. In situations of possible rabies exposure, the benefits of receiving Chirorab vaccine during pregnancy generally outweigh potential risks, and international guidelines support its use when indicated. For pre‑exposure vaccination in pregnant women who are at ongoing risk, the decision should be individualized after discussing risks and benefits with a healthcare professional. Available data and experience with inactivated rabies vaccines have not shown specific harm to the fetus, but vaccination should always be guided by medical advice.
Inactivated rabies vaccines like Chirorab are generally considered compatible with breastfeeding. When a breastfeeding mother has a possible rabies exposure, vaccination should not be delayed, as protecting the mother from rabies is essential. There is no evidence that the vaccine harms the breastfed infant, and it is not expected to affect milk production. However, breastfeeding women should inform their healthcare provider so that individual circumstances can be assessed and appropriate guidance provided.
People with chronic liver disease can generally receive inactivated vaccines such as Chirorab. In fact, chronic liver disease may increase the risk of severe infections, so protection against rabies remains important. However, liver disease can sometimes affect the immune response, and overall health status should be considered. In the setting of a possible rabies exposure, the life‑saving benefit of vaccination usually outweighs concerns. Patients with liver problems should inform their doctor before vaccination so that they can be monitored and managed appropriately.
Yes, most patients with kidney disease, including those with chronic kidney impairment, can receive inactivated vaccines like Chirorab. Kidney disease may alter immune responses, so it is important that the vaccination schedule is followed carefully and that any additional recommendations from the treating nephrologist are observed. In the event of a suspected rabies exposure, vaccination should not be withheld because the risk from rabies is extremely high. Patients with kidney disease should discuss their condition and current medications with their healthcare provider before vaccination.
Chirorab vaccine is not known to directly impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, some people may experience side effects such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, or feeling unwell after vaccination. If you feel dizzy, unusually tired, or otherwise unwell, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you feel normal again. Always listen to your body’s response and follow your healthcare provider’s advice regarding activities after vaccination.
There is no specific evidence that moderate alcohol consumption directly interferes with the effectiveness of Chirorab vaccine. However, alcohol can affect the immune system, may worsen side effects such as dizziness or fatigue, and can impair judgment, which is important if you need to monitor for any adverse reactions. It is generally advisable to limit or avoid alcohol around the time of vaccination, especially during post‑exposure treatment, and to follow any specific advice given by your healthcare provider.
People with a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to any component of a rabies vaccine or to a previous dose should inform their healthcare provider before receiving Chirorab. In some cases, vaccination may still be recommended because of the life‑threatening nature of rabies, but it must be done under close medical supervision with emergency treatment available. Mild allergies, such as seasonal allergies or mild reactions to other medicines, do not usually prevent vaccination, but all allergies should be discussed with the doctor or vaccination center beforehand.
Common side effects of Chirorab vaccine include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, low‑grade fever, headache, muscle or joint pain, and general tiredness. These reactions are usually mild and resolve within a few days. Less commonly, people may experience rash or more pronounced fever. Very rarely, serious allergic reactions can occur, with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. If you notice signs of a severe reaction or feel very unwell after vaccination, seek immediate medical attention. Always report any unexpected or persistent side effects to your healthcare provider.
