About CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S

  • Cifran CTH is a prescription-only antibacterial and antiprotozoal combination medicine that contains ciprofloxacin and tinidazole. Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, while tinidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative. Together, they are used to treat a range of mixed bacterial and protozoal infections, particularly in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Typical indications include infectious diarrhea and dysentery suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria and protozoa, certain pelvic and intra-abdominal infections, and some dental or gynecological infections when mixed flora are expected. The choice of this combination should always be based on clinical judgment, local antimicrobial resistance patterns, and, where possible, culture and sensitivity results. Ciprofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to rapid bacterial cell death. Tinidazole works by entering susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa and damaging their DNA through the formation of reactive intermediates, ultimately resulting in cell death. The dual mechanism helps cover both aerobic gram-negative bacteria and certain anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, which is why the combination is often chosen for polymicrobial infections. Cifran CTH should be taken exactly as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. The duration of therapy depends on the site and severity of infection, patient age, kidney and liver function, and response to treatment. It is important not to stop the medicine early, even if symptoms improve, because incomplete courses can contribute to treatment failure and antimicrobial resistance. The tablets are usually swallowed whole with water and can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, metallic or altered taste, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, and weakness. Most of these are mild and transient, but persistent or severe symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional. Serious but less common adverse effects of ciprofloxacin include tendonitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system effects such as seizures or agitation, and disturbances in heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Tinidazole may rarely cause severe skin reactions, blood dyscrasias, or neurological symptoms such as numbness or tingling. Cifran CTH is not suitable for everyone. It should be used with particular caution in patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones, myasthenia gravis, significant cardiac rhythm disturbances, epilepsy or other seizure disorders, peripheral neuropathy, or severe kidney or liver impairment. It is generally avoided in children and adolescents unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk and no suitable alternatives are available, because fluoroquinolones can affect growing cartilage. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding requires careful risk–benefit assessment by a doctor. Drug interactions are clinically important with this combination. Ciprofloxacin can interact with medicines that prolong the QT interval, certain antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotics, theophylline, warfarin and other vitamin K antagonists, some antidiabetic agents, and drugs that affect kidney function. Tinidazole can potentiate the effect of warfarin and has a disulfiram-like interaction with alcohol, leading to flushing, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and headache if alcohol is consumed during treatment and for a period after stopping. Patients should inform their doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements they are taking before starting Cifran CTH. Because of the risk of serious adverse effects and the need to consider local resistance patterns, Cifran CTH should not be used for self-medication or for minor, self-limiting conditions such as simple viral colds or uncomplicated viral gastroenteritis. If you miss a dose, it should generally be taken as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. In case of suspected overdose, such as taking significantly more tablets than prescribed, immediate medical attention is required. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and local clinical guidelines when using this medicine.

How CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S Works

  • CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S is a combination medication designed to combat infections effectively. It contains two active ingredients: Ciprofloxacin and Tinidazole. Each component works through distinct mechanisms to target different types of microorganisms, providing a broad spectrum of antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity.
  • Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones. It functions by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. By blocking these enzymes, Ciprofloxacin effectively halts bacterial cell growth and multiplication. Specifically, it binds to the A subunit of DNA gyrase, preventing the enzyme from resealing the DNA strands after they have been cut for replication. This leads to DNA fragmentation and ultimately, bacterial cell death. Ciprofloxacin is particularly effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, making it a valuable tool in treating various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and skin infections.
  • Tinidazole, on the other hand, is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. It works by entering the microbial cell and damaging its DNA. Once inside the cell, Tinidazole is reduced to its active form, which creates cytotoxic free radicals. These free radicals interact with DNA, causing strand breakage and destabilization of the DNA structure. This damage disrupts the microorganism's ability to replicate and survive. Tinidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica, which are responsible for causing intestinal infections like giardiasis and amebiasis. By targeting these organisms, Tinidazole helps to resolve infections in the gastrointestinal tract and other areas of the body.
  • The combination of Ciprofloxacin and Tinidazole in CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S offers a synergistic effect, meaning that the two drugs work together to provide enhanced antimicrobial activity. This is particularly useful in treating mixed infections where both bacteria and protozoa are present. The broad-spectrum activity of Ciprofloxacin combined with the antiprotozoal action of Tinidazole ensures comprehensive coverage against a wide range of pathogens. This reduces the likelihood of treatment failure and helps to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
  • In summary, CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S works by employing two different mechanisms to disrupt the growth and survival of microorganisms. Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA replication by targeting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, while Tinidazole damages microbial DNA through the generation of cytotoxic free radicals. This dual action makes CIFRAN CTH TABLET 10'S an effective treatment option for a variety of infections, ensuring that both bacterial and protozoal pathogens are targeted for complete eradication.

What is Cifran CTH used for?Arrow

Cifran CTH is a fixed-dose combination of ciprofloxacin and tinidazole used to treat certain bacterial and protozoal infections, particularly in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. It is commonly prescribed for infectious diarrhea or dysentery suspected to be due to mixed pathogens, some pelvic and intra-abdominal infections, and other polymicrobial infections where both aerobic and anaerobic organisms may be involved. The exact indication for an individual patient should be determined by a qualified doctor based on symptoms, examination, and, when available, laboratory results.

How does Cifran CTH work in the body?Arrow

Cifran CTH contains ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and tinidazole, a nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for DNA replication and repair, leading to bacterial cell death. Tinidazole enters susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa and forms reactive intermediates that damage DNA, resulting in cell death. The combination provides broad coverage against certain gram-negative bacteria, some gram-positive bacteria, anaerobes, and protozoa, making it useful for mixed infections.

How should I take Cifran CTH?Arrow

Cifran CTH should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The tablets are usually swallowed whole with a glass of water and can often be taken with food to reduce stomach upset, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Do not crush or chew the tablets unless specifically instructed. Take the medicine at evenly spaced intervals to maintain consistent levels in your body. Do not change the dose, dosing interval, or duration of treatment on your own, and do not share your medicine with others.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Cifran CTH?Arrow

If you miss a dose of Cifran CTH, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose, as this may increase the risk of side effects without improving effectiveness. If you frequently forget doses, speak with your healthcare provider about strategies to improve adherence or whether an alternative regimen is more suitable.

What are the common side effects of Cifran CTH?Arrow

Common side effects of Cifran CTH include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, metallic or altered taste, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, and general weakness or fatigue. Some people may also experience mild skin rash or itching. These effects are often temporary and may improve as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, if side effects are severe, persistent, or worsening, you should contact your doctor promptly for assessment and possible adjustment of therapy.

What serious side effects should I watch for while taking Cifran CTH?Arrow

Serious side effects, although less common, require urgent medical attention. These include tendon pain, swelling, or sudden tendon rupture (especially in the Achilles tendon), severe muscle or joint pain, new or worsening nerve symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness, seizures, confusion, hallucinations, severe mood changes, irregular heartbeat or palpitations, severe or persistent diarrhea (which may indicate Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea), yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling, and signs of a severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or widespread rash. If any of these occur, stop the medicine and seek immediate medical care.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Cifran CTH?Arrow

Alcohol should be strictly avoided while taking Cifran CTH and for a period after completing therapy, as advised by your doctor. Tinidazole can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, leading to flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and a rapid heartbeat. Even small amounts of alcohol, including in some cough syrups, mouthwashes, or fermented foods, may trigger this reaction. To reduce the risk of serious discomfort and complications, abstain from alcohol during treatment and follow your doctor’s guidance on when it is safe to resume drinking.

Is Cifran CTH safe during pregnancy?Arrow

Use of Cifran CTH during pregnancy is generally not preferred and is considered only when the expected benefit to the mother clearly outweighs potential risks to the fetus. Fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin have raised concerns in animal studies regarding effects on developing cartilage, and tinidazole is usually avoided, especially in the first trimester. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to conceive, you must inform your doctor before starting Cifran CTH. Your doctor may choose an alternative antibiotic with a more established safety profile in pregnancy whenever possible.

Can I take Cifran CTH while breastfeeding?Arrow

Both ciprofloxacin and tinidazole can pass into breast milk. Because of potential adverse effects on the nursing infant, including possible effects on cartilage development from ciprofloxacin and theoretical mutagenic or carcinogenic concerns with tinidazole, Cifran CTH is usually avoided during breastfeeding unless no suitable alternative exists. If your doctor decides that Cifran CTH is necessary, they may advise you to temporarily interrupt breastfeeding and express and discard breast milk during treatment and for a recommended period after the last dose. Always follow your doctor’s specific advice regarding breastfeeding and this medicine.

Can children take Cifran CTH?Arrow

Cifran CTH is generally not the first choice in children and adolescents because fluoroquinolones like ciprofloxacin have been associated with effects on growing cartilage and an increased risk of musculoskeletal adverse events. In certain serious infections where no suitable alternatives are available and the benefits outweigh the risks, a specialist may prescribe ciprofloxacin-based regimens to children under close supervision. Tinidazole use in children is also subject to age- and weight-based considerations. Any use of Cifran CTH in pediatric patients must be strictly guided by a pediatrician or infectious disease specialist.

Can Cifran CTH be used for viral infections such as the common cold or flu?Arrow

No. Cifran CTH is active against certain bacteria and protozoa, not viruses. It should not be used for viral infections such as the common cold, influenza, or uncomplicated viral gastroenteritis. Using antibiotics inappropriately for viral illnesses does not improve symptoms, exposes you to unnecessary side effects, and contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance. Only use Cifran CTH when it has been specifically prescribed by a healthcare professional for a confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial or protozoal infection.
