Colospa X Tablet is a combination medicine containing chlordiazepoxide 5 mg and mebeverine 135 mg. It is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional bowel disorders associated with abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, and altered bowel habits. Mebeverine helps relieve intestinal muscle spasms, while chlordiazepoxide reduces anxiety and provides additional muscle relaxation, which can help improve gastrointestinal symptoms.
Colospa X Tablet works through two complementary mechanisms. Mebeverine is a direct-acting antispasmodic that relaxes the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing painful spasms and cramps without significantly disturbing normal gut motility. Chlordiazepoxide is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the central nervous system, producing anxiolytic, sedative, and muscle-relaxant effects. Together, these actions help relieve both the physical and emotional components of IBS and related conditions.
Colospa X Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose, timing, and duration of treatment are individualized based on your condition and response. Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not crush or chew it unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. It may be taken with or without food, but follow your doctor’s instructions or the directions on the dispensing label. Do not change the dose, take it more frequently, or use it for longer than recommended without consulting your doctor.
Yes. Because Colospa X Tablet contains chlordiazepoxide, it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, slowed reaction time, and impaired concentration in some individuals. These effects may be more pronounced at the start of treatment, after dose increases, or when taken with alcohol or other sedating medicines. You should avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks that require full mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you. If you feel sleepy, light-headed, or less alert, do not engage in such activities.
Common side effects of Colospa X Tablet may include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, headache, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, mild abdominal discomfort, or skin rash. Some people may also experience blurred vision or reduced concentration. These effects are often mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, if side effects are persistent, troublesome, or worsening, you should contact your doctor for advice.
Colospa X Tablet contains chlordiazepoxide, a benzodiazepine that can cause physical and psychological dependence, especially when used at higher doses or for prolonged periods. Abrupt discontinuation after long-term use may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, irritability, tremors, or, rarely, seizures. To minimize this risk, use Colospa X Tablet only for the duration recommended by your doctor and do not stop it suddenly without medical guidance. If discontinuation is needed, your doctor may advise a gradual dose reduction.
Alcohol should be avoided while taking Colospa X Tablet. Both alcohol and chlordiazepoxide depress the central nervous system, and their combined use can lead to excessive sedation, dizziness, impaired coordination, and, in severe cases, respiratory depression or loss of consciousness. Alcohol may also worsen gastrointestinal symptoms in some patients. If you consume alcohol regularly, discuss this with your doctor before starting treatment.
Use of Colospa X Tablet during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risks, and only under close medical supervision. Chlordiazepoxide can cross the placenta and has been associated with adverse effects on the fetus, particularly when used in high doses or for prolonged periods, especially in late pregnancy. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to conceive, you should inform your doctor before starting or continuing Colospa X Tablet so that an appropriate risk–benefit assessment can be made.
Chlordiazepoxide passes into breast milk and may cause sedation, poor feeding, or other adverse effects in a breastfed infant, particularly with prolonged use or higher doses. Because of this, Colospa X Tablet is generally not preferred during breastfeeding. If treatment is considered essential, your doctor will weigh the potential benefits to you against the possible risks to your baby and may recommend close monitoring of the infant or an alternative therapy. Do not use this medicine while breastfeeding without medical advice.
Colospa X Tablet should generally be avoided in individuals with known hypersensitivity to mebeverine, chlordiazepoxide, other benzodiazepines, or any component of the formulation. It is usually contraindicated or used with great caution in patients with severe liver impairment, severe respiratory insufficiency, sleep apnea syndrome, myasthenia gravis, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, a history of benzodiazepine or substance misuse, or certain severe psychiatric disorders. Children and adolescents may not be suitable candidates unless specifically advised by a specialist. Always inform your doctor about your full medical history before starting this medicine.
You should not stop taking Colospa X Tablet abruptly without consulting your doctor, especially if you have been using it regularly for more than a short period. Sudden discontinuation of chlordiazepoxide can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, sleep disturbances, irritability, or, rarely, more serious reactions. Your doctor will advise you on whether the medicine can be stopped and, if necessary, will provide a tapering schedule to reduce the dose gradually and minimize withdrawal risk.
