Generally well tolerated, and side effects are uncommon and usually mild. Possible effects include mild stomach upset, nausea, a "fishy" body odour or bad breath (from carnitine), and, occasionally, loose stools or heartburn. Zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea.Serious (rare): allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling — stop the supplement and seek medical advice if these occur. Very high or prolonged zinc intake from multiple sources can affect copper levels, so avoid taking additional zinc supplements at the same time without medical advice.
Take one tablet a day (or as directed by your doctor), preferably with or after food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Swallow it whole with water. Take it consistently for best results.
Because sperm take about 2–3 months to mature, fertility supplements are usually taken for at least 3 months before improvements in sperm parameters are assessed. Be patient and consistent, and follow up with your doctor for semen analysis if being treated for fertility.
It is most commonly used to support male fertility, but its ingredients also act as general antioxidants. Any use for other purposes, or in women, should be guided by a doctor. It is a supplement, not a cure for infertility, which may have other causes needing evaluation.
Tell your doctor if you have thyroid problems, seizures, or kidney disease, as L-carnitine needs caution in these. Mention all other supplements and medicines you take, avoid duplicating zinc or antioxidant products, and use it in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice.
