Common: local reactions at the application site such as burning, stinging, itching, dryness, or redness, usually mild. With prolonged or excessive use (especially of the potent steroid): thinning of the skin, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels, discoloration, increased hair growth, and acne-like eruptions. Overuse on large areas or under dressings can rarely lead to steroid being absorbed into the body. Serious (seek medical attention): worsening or spreading of the infection, signs of an allergic reaction (severe rash, swelling), or, with long-term misuse, systemic steroid effects. Important: using a potent steroid on a plain fungal infection (like ringworm) can mask it and make it spread and harder to treat ("steroid-modified tinea") — use only as prescribed.
Wash and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer once or twice a day exactly as prescribed — usually for a short course only. Wash your hands before and after (unless the hands are being treated). Do not cover the area with a tight bandage unless your doctor tells you to.
Avoid using it on the face, skin folds, or genital area unless specifically prescribed, as these areas are prone to steroid side effects. Do not use it longer than your doctor advises — potent steroids like clobetasol can thin and damage the skin with prolonged use. Do not use it as a routine or "fairness" cream.
It should not be used on viral skin infections (herpes, chickenpox, shingles), on open wounds, or on plain uninfected fungal/acne/rosacea conditions. It is generally intended for adults and older children — check with your doctor for younger children.
If there is no improvement within the prescribed period, or the rash spreads, worsens, or keeps recurring after stopping, see your doctor. Fungal infections in particular may need a plain antifungal without a steroid; continued steroid use can make them worse.
Use it only on your doctor's advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and avoid applying it on the breast area if breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about any allergies and all other skin products you are using.
