• Nandrolone decanoate binds to androgen receptors in muscle and bone, promoting protein synthesis and nitrogen retention. In bone, this supports bone mineral density, which is why it has been used in postmenopausal osteoporosis. In certain anaemias, nandrolone can stimulate red blood cell production, improving the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
• Androgen receptors exist throughout the body, well beyond bone and bone marrow, so nandrolone's effects extend to other tissues too. This wider action accounts for many of its side effects and the need for regular monitoring during treatment.

Fluid retention, weight gain, acne and changes in body hair are reported. In women, voice deepening and menstrual changes can occur. In men, testicular changes, reduced sperm production and breast enlargement have been reported. Long-term or high-exposure use can affect liver function, cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk, which is why periodic blood tests are part of treatment.
