• Dithranol slows excessive skin-cell proliferation in psoriasis. Salicylic acid softens and loosens scale, and coal tar has anti-inflammatory and anti-scaling effects. The combination may be used for thick scaly plaques selected by a clinician. Its activity does not make it appropriate for every inflammatory or itchy skin problem.

Possible local effects include burning, stinging, redness, irritation, dryness, rash or inflammation, especially if the ointment contacts unaffected skin. Dithranol can cause temporary skin staining and permanent stains on clothing, hair or household surfaces. Coal tar can irritate the skin and may make treated areas more sensitive to ultraviolet light. An allergic reaction is possible. Stop application and obtain medical advice if there is severe burning, blistering, marked swelling, spreading redness or a significant rash. Avoid the eyes, lips, mucous membranes and delicate skin unless a dermatologist specifically directs otherwise. Do not cover the area with a dressing unless the prescriber instructs this, because covering can alter exposure and irritation.
