How DIAMOX 250MG TABLET 15'S Works

• Acetazolamide inhibits the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in several tissues, including the eye, kidney and central nervous system. In the eye, this reduces the production of aqueous humour, the fluid that fills the space between the lens and cornea, which lowers the raised pressure characteristic of glaucoma and helps protect the optic nerve.
• In the kidneys, acetazolamide reduces the reabsorption of bicarbonate, increasing the excretion of bicarbonate, sodium, water and potassium, which contributes to its mild diuretic effect. In the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, these same changes help reduce cerebrospinal fluid pressure and can influence nerve cell excitability, which is relevant to its use in certain seizure disorders and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. At high altitude, acetazolamide stimulates breathing and corrects the acid-base disturbance that contributes to acute mountain sickness.

Increased urination, tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes or around the mouth, a change in taste, loss of appetite, mild stomach upset and tiredness are the most commonly reported effects, and are often dose-related. A severe skin reaction, unexplained bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe abdominal or flank pain need immediate medical attention, since these can signal a serious blood, liver, kidney or skin reaction.

• Store the tablets in their original pack, at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and out of the reach of children and pets.

• Take at the same time each day, with or without food
• Stay well hydrated and include potassium-rich foods, such as bananas, if advised by the doctor
• Avoid driving or operating machinery until it is known how this tablet affects alertness
• Tell the prescriber about kidney stones, liver or kidney disease, or a sulfa allergy before starting
• Attend periodic blood tests to monitor electrolytes and kidney function, particularly with prolonged use
• Seek urgent medical help for a rash, unexplained bruising, persistent sore throat or fever, or yellowing of the skin or eyes

• Diamox can be taken with or without food. There is no other specific food interaction established, though maintaining good hydration supports its intended action.
