Common: drowsiness or sleepiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and mild nausea. Chlorpheniramine may also cause blurred vision or constipation. Others: stomach upset from bromhexine, and occasionally headache or a feeling of tiredness. Serious (seek medical attention): signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face/lips, difficulty breathing); severe dizziness, confusion, or, rarely, hallucinations (more likely with overdose or in the elderly). Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Take it as directed by your doctor or the label, using the measuring cup provided (not a household spoon). Adult doses are typically taken every 6–8 hours; children's doses are lower and based on age. It can be taken with or without food.
Yes — the chlorpheniramine commonly causes drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines, which increase drowsiness.
It combines a cough suppressant with a mucolytic, so it is used for cough associated with colds. However, for a very productive (heavily phlegmy) chest cough, suppressing the cough may not be ideal — check with your pharmacist or doctor about which cough medicine suits your symptoms.
Tell your doctor if you have asthma or breathing problems, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate/difficulty urinating, liver or kidney problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should be used cautiously in young children and the elderly, and avoided with MAO-inhibitor antidepressants.
Use it only for short-term relief. If the cough lasts more than about a week, keeps returning, or comes with high fever, rash, persistent headache, breathlessness, or blood in the phlegm, stop and see a doctor.
