How DUPHALAC SYRUP 450 ML Works

• In the colon, bacteria break down lactulose into acids that draw water into the bowel by osmosis. This increases the water content and softens the stool, stimulates the bowel muscles, and makes bowel movements easier to pass.
• In hepatic encephalopathy, the acids produced by this bacterial breakdown lower the pH of the colon, which reduces the growth of ammonia-producing bacteria and favours the conversion of ammonia into a form that is less easily absorbed into the blood. By lowering the amount of ammonia reaching the bloodstream and brain, lactulose helps reduce the confusion and other symptoms associated with hepatic encephalopathy. It also acts as a prebiotic, supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

Flatulence and abdominal discomfort are the most commonly reported effects, particularly when starting treatment, and usually ease with continued use. Diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting have also been reported, especially with a higher amount than needed. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or diarrhoea that does not settle need prompt medical attention, since prolonged diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and a disturbance in body salts.

• Store the bottle in its original pack, below 25°C unless the pack states otherwise, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and out of the reach of children.

• Measure the amount with a proper measuring device for accuracy

• Allow a day or so to see an effect, since it does not work immediately
• Reduce the amount used or consult a doctor if loose stools become excessive
• Seek prompt medical attention for severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting

• This syrup can be taken with or without food. Maintaining good fluid intake supports its intended effect.
