Generally well tolerated. Common: ankle or leg swelling (usually less than with regular amlodipine, and dose-related), flushing, headache, dizziness, and tiredness. Palpitations can also occur. Less common: nausea, abdominal discomfort, and, occasionally, gum swelling. Serious (seek medical attention): fainting, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, marked worsening of chest pain shortly after starting (rare), severe swelling, sudden shortness of breath, or signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of face/lips, difficulty breathing). Report these promptly.
Take one tablet once a day, at about the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow it whole with water. Taking it consistently keeps your blood pressure controlled around the clock.
Yes. High blood pressure is usually long-term, and the tablet controls it rather than curing it. Do not stop or change the dose on your own — your blood pressure can rise again. Speak to your doctor before making any change.
Mild ankle swelling is a known effect of this class of medicine, though usually less with S-amlodipine. Moving around regularly, elevating your legs, and reducing salt can help. If the swelling is significant, one-sided, or comes with breathlessness or rapid weight gain, contact your doctor rather than stopping the tablet yourself.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Your doctor will decide whether to continue it or choose a more suitable blood-pressure medicine for your situation.
Limit alcohol, as it can add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect and cause dizziness. Stand up slowly when starting treatment, and tell your doctor if you have liver problems or heart failure, or take other heart/blood-pressure medicines. Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice, which can raise drug levels.
