Generally well tolerated. Common: diarrhoea, tiredness, and cold-like symptoms; muscle or joint aches can occur (more likely when combined with a statin). Serious (seek medical attention): unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine; yellowing of the skin/eyes or persistent nausea (liver problems); or an allergic reaction.
Take one tablet once a day, with or without food, at about the same time each day. It can be taken at the same time as a statin if prescribed together.
Usually yes. It controls cholesterol rather than curing it, and levels rise again if you stop. Do not stop without your doctor's advice.
Report unexplained, persistent, or severe muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor, especially with fever or dark urine — more relevant if you also take a statin.
Do not drink alcohol, which adds strain on the liver. If you take a bile-acid medicine (colestyramine), separate the doses by a few hours, as it reduces ezetimibe absorption.
Your doctor checks cholesterol to see how well it is working, and liver tests if you also take a statin. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
