How FLUVIR 75MG CAPSULE 10'S Works

• Oseltamivir is a prodrug, which the liver converts to its active form, oseltamivir carboxylate. This blocks neuraminidase, an enzyme on the surface of the influenza virus. The virus needs neuraminidase to enter new cells and to release newly made virus particles from infected cells.
• With neuraminidase blocked, new virus particles stay stuck to the infected cell and cannot spread through the airways. This reduces the amount of virus in the body, which is why treatment works best when it is started early.

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and headache. They usually occur on the first or second day and settle within a day or two. Taking the capsule with food can reduce nausea. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, indigestion, dizziness, tiredness, difficulty sleeping, cough and a runny nose are also reported. Influenza itself can cause confusion, hallucinations and abnormal behaviour, and such events have also been reported in people taking oseltamivir, mainly children and teenagers. Anyone with influenza, especially a child, should be watched closely for sudden changes in behaviour. A doctor should be contacted straight away if this occurs. Rare but serious reactions include severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, allergic reactions with swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, fits, irregular heartbeat, liver inflammation and bleeding from the gut. These need urgent medical attention.

• Fluvir can be taken with or without food. Taking it with a meal or snack may reduce nausea and vomiting. Plenty of fluids and rest help recovery from influenza.
