Composition
Most side effects are digestive and most common when starting or increasing the dose: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, and reduced appetite. If combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar. Serious (seek medical attention): severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to the back (possible pancreatitis); gallbladder problems; dehydration affecting the kidneys; and vision changes in diabetic eye disease. Boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumours; not for those with a personal/family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2.
Inject it under the skin of your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week, at any time, with or without food. Rotate the injection site. Your doctor or nurse will train you on the pen.
Yes. Attach a new sterile needle for each injection and remove it immediately after — never store the pen with the needle on. Reusing needles causes pain, risks infection, and can affect the dose. Never share your pen.
Treatment starts at a low dose and is stepped up gradually to reduce nausea and other stomach side effects. Follow your doctor's titration schedule and do not increase it faster yourself.
Take it as soon as possible if it is within a few days (generally up to 5 days) of the missed dose, then continue your usual schedule. If more time has passed, skip it and take the next dose on the usual day.
Eat smaller, bland meals and stop when full; stay hydrated and do not drink alcohol. Keep the pen refrigerated (do not freeze); once in use it may be kept as directed in the pack insert.
