Composition
The most important side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), especially if a meal is missed or delayed, with heavy exercise, or with alcohol. Warning signs include shakiness, sweating, hunger, palpitations, dizziness, and confusion. Others: nausea, stomach upset, and weight gain. Skin rash or itching can occur occasionally. Serious (seek medical attention): severe or prolonged low blood sugar (which needs urgent treatment); signs of an allergic reaction; and, rarely, liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine) or significant changes in blood counts. Report these promptly.
Take it with meals exactly as prescribed — often half a tablet to one tablet with breakfast, and a second dose with the evening meal if your doctor advises a higher total dose. Swallow it with water. Always take it with food to reduce the risk of low blood sugar, and don't skip meals after taking it.
Take it with food as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose — in that case skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once, as this can cause low blood sugar.
Signs include sweating, shakiness, hunger, a pounding heart, dizziness, or confusion. Treat it promptly with a fast-acting sugar (glucose tablets, juice, or sugar), then have a snack or meal. Always carry a sugar source. A severe episode or loss of consciousness needs emergency care.
Avoid alcohol, it can cause unpredictable and sometimes severe low blood sugar, and may cause flushing or feeling unwell with gliclazide.

Use extra caution if you have liver or kidney problems, are elderly, eat irregularly, or are unwell, as these raise the risk of low blood sugar. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
