How GRILINCTUS SYRUP 100 ML Works

• Guaifenesin increases the volume and reduces the stickiness of airway secretions, so mucus becomes easier to move upwards and cough out. Ammonium chloride works towards the same result and mildly irritates the stomach lining, which reflexly increases secretion in the airways.
• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain and raises the threshold at which the cough reflex fires, which reduces the frequency of an irritating cough.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is the chemical released during an allergic response, and blocking it eases sneezing, a running nose and itchy, watery eyes. Chlorpheniramine also reaches the brain, which accounts for the drowsiness patients report.

Drowsiness comes from the chlorpheniramine and is the effect patients notice most. In some people it is strong enough to interfere with study, work or driving.
