Generally well tolerated. The most common effects come from the iron content: nausea, stomach upset, a metallic taste, constipation or diarrhoea, and darkening of the stools (black stools) — this is harmless and expected with iron. Liquid iron can also temporarily stain the teeth. Serious (seek medical attention): signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of the face/lips, difficulty breathing) or severe, persistent stomach pain or vomiting. Important safety note: accidental iron overdose is a leading cause of poisoning in young children — keep this product well out of their reach.
Take the dose advised by your doctor (commonly 15 ml once or twice a day) using the measuring cup provided. It is often taken after food to reduce stomach upset. Iron is absorbed better with vitamin C (e.g. citrus), but avoid taking it at the same time as tea, coffee, milk, or calcium, which reduce iron absorption.
Black or dark stools are a normal, harmless effect of taking iron and are not a cause for concern. However, if the stools are black and tarry along with stomach pain, tell your doctor, as this can occasionally indicate bleeding.
Liquid iron can stain teeth temporarily. You can dilute the dose in a little water, take it with a straw, and rinse your mouth or brush your teeth afterwards to reduce staining.
Anaemia usually takes several weeks to months to correct, and treatment often continues for a while after levels normalise to rebuild iron stores. Follow your doctor's advice on duration and keep up with blood tests to check your response.
Avoid it if you have an iron-overload condition (such as haemochromatosis) unless your doctor advises. Tell your doctor if you have stomach ulcers or take other medicines, as iron can reduce the absorption of some drugs — space them a couple of hours apart. Keep it away from children.
