How HEPAMERZ OA SYRUP 100 ML Works

• Ammonia is produced in the gut and by the body's own protein breakdown. A healthy liver turns it into urea, which the kidneys pass out in urine. In cirrhosis, the liver cannot do this well, so ammonia reaches the brain and disturbs its function.
• Ornithine and aspartate are raw materials for the two main ammonia-clearing pathways. Ornithine drives the urea cycle in the remaining liver cells. Both amino acids are also used to make glutamine, which binds ammonia in muscle and other tissues. Together they lower blood ammonia.

Side effects are uncommon and usually short-lived. They include nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, wind and diarrhoea, and they often settle if the dose is reduced. Limb pain has been reported in isolated cases. Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing need urgent medical attention.

• If you miss a dose of Hepamerz OA Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

• Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and follow the storage instruction printed on the current Win-Medicare pack. Keep it out of the reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date.

• Use the measuring device provided for each dose
• Avoid alcohol completely
• Keep taking any laxative the doctor has prescribed
• Tell the doctor about kidney problems
• Avoid sleeping tablets and sedatives unless the doctor prescribes them
• Seek urgent care for increasing confusion or drowsiness

• No specific food interaction is known. People with cirrhosis should follow the doctor's or dietitian's advice on protein and salt. Protein is usually not restricted heavily, because good nutrition helps protect muscle.
