Allergies
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivityDo not take Itrasys 200 if you have a known allergy to itraconazole or any of the excipients in the formulation.
Itrasys 200 contains itraconazole, an antifungal medicine used to treat various fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, throat, lungs, and certain internal organs. It may be prescribed for conditions such as ringworm infections, fungal nail infections (onychomycosis), pityriasis versicolor, oral or esophageal candidiasis, and some systemic fungal infections, depending on your doctor’s assessment and local treatment guidelines.
Itrasys 200 works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane. Without adequate ergosterol, the fungal cell membrane becomes unstable and leaky, which interferes with the growth and survival of the fungus. This action either kills the fungus or stops it from multiplying, allowing the body’s immune system to clear the infection more effectively.
Take Itrasys 200 exactly as prescribed by your doctor and follow the instructions on the package insert. It is usually taken by mouth, often after a full meal to improve absorption. Swallow the capsule whole with water and do not crush or chew it unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. Do not change the dose, frequency, or duration of treatment on your own, and do not stop the medicine early even if you feel better, unless your doctor tells you to.
Yes, itraconazole can affect liver function in some patients. Mild, reversible increases in liver enzymes are relatively common, and in rare cases, serious liver injury, including hepatitis or liver failure, can occur. Your doctor may order blood tests to monitor liver function, especially if treatment is prolonged or if you already have liver disease. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop symptoms such as persistent nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
In patients with kidney impairment, the use of Itrasys 200 requires caution. While itraconazole is mainly metabolized by the liver, kidney function can influence the overall handling of the drug and its formulation, especially certain intravenous forms. Your doctor will assess your kidney function and may adjust treatment choice, monitor you more closely, or consider alternative therapies if necessary. Do not use this medicine without medical advice if you have known kidney disease.
Use of itraconazole during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Some data suggest a risk of harm when used in early pregnancy, particularly at higher doses or for systemic infections. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, you must inform your doctor before starting Itrasys 200. Effective contraception is usually advised for women of childbearing potential during treatment and for a period after the last dose, as recommended by your doctor.
Itraconazole passes into breast milk in small amounts. Because the potential effects on a nursing infant are not fully known, the use of Itrasys 200 during breastfeeding is generally approached with caution. Your doctor will weigh the benefits of treatment for you against any possible risk to your baby. In some cases, your doctor may advise temporarily stopping breastfeeding or choosing an alternative antifungal treatment. Do not make these decisions on your own; always consult your healthcare provider.
Itrasys 200 may cause side effects such as dizziness, blurred vision, or fatigue in some individuals. If you experience any of these symptoms, your ability to drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks that require alertness may be impaired. Until you know how this medicine affects you, avoid driving or using heavy machinery. If such symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor for advice.
It is advisable to avoid or minimize alcohol consumption while taking Itrasys 200. Both alcohol and itraconazole can affect the liver, and using them together may increase the risk of liver-related side effects. Alcohol can also worsen dizziness or stomach upset associated with the medicine. If you regularly drink alcohol or have a history of alcohol-related liver disease, inform your doctor before starting treatment.
If you have a known allergy to itraconazole or other azole antifungals such as fluconazole, ketoconazole, or voriconazole, you must inform your doctor before taking Itrasys 200. Signs of an allergic reaction can include rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing. If you develop any of these symptoms after taking a dose, stop the medicine and seek emergency medical attention immediately. Your doctor will choose an alternative antifungal if needed.
Yes, Itrasys 200 has many potential drug interactions because itraconazole affects and is affected by certain liver enzymes involved in drug metabolism. It can interact with medicines such as some cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), certain heart rhythm medicines, some benzodiazepines, rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, certain HIV medicines, and drugs that reduce stomach acid, among others. These interactions can increase side effects or reduce effectiveness. Always give your doctor and pharmacist a complete list of all prescription medicines, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements you are taking before starting Itrasys 200.
