How LAXOLITE ORAL LIQUID 200ML Works

• Polyethylene glycol is a large molecule that passes through the gut without being absorbed or broken down by gut bacteria. It works purely by osmosis, holding water within the bowel that would otherwise be absorbed into the body.
• This retained water increases the volume and softens the consistency of the stool, making it easier to pass and stimulating the bowel muscles to move it along. Because this action does not depend on bacterial fermentation, it tends to cause less bloating and gas than some other osmotic laxatives, and it does not have a specific role in conditions such as hepatic encephalopathy.

Bloating, abdominal discomfort and nausea are the most commonly reported effects, particularly when starting treatment. Loose stools or diarrhoea can occur, especially if a larger amount than needed is taken. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and reduced urination need prompt medical attention.
