• MINESSE TABLET 28'S is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing two synthetic hormones: gestodene (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an estrogen). These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy through several mechanisms. Primarily, MINESSE prevents ovulation, which is the release of an egg from the ovary. By suppressing the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, MINESSE inhibits the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. FSH is responsible for the development of ovarian follicles, and LH triggers ovulation. Without these hormones in sufficient quantities, the ovaries do not release an egg.
• In addition to preventing ovulation, MINESSE also alters the cervical mucus, making it thicker and more difficult for sperm to penetrate the uterus. The progestogen component, gestodene, is primarily responsible for this effect. The thickened cervical mucus acts as a physical barrier, preventing sperm from reaching the egg, even if ovulation were to occur. This added layer of protection significantly reduces the chances of fertilization.
• Furthermore, MINESSE affects the endometrium, the lining of the uterus. It makes the endometrium thinner and less receptive to implantation. Even if fertilization does occur, a thin and unfavorable endometrium makes it difficult for the fertilized egg to implant and develop. This triple action—preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and altering the endometrium—makes MINESSE a highly effective contraceptive when taken correctly. The consistent daily intake of the pill is crucial to maintaining these hormonal levels and ensuring the contraceptive effect. • The 28-day pack includes 21 active pills containing hormones and 7 inactive pills (placebo). During the days when the inactive pills are taken, a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period) usually occurs. This bleeding is a result of the drop in hormone levels when the active pills are stopped. Continuing to take a pill every day, even the inactive ones, helps maintain the habit and reduces the risk of forgetting to restart the active pills after the hormone-free interval. Like all medicines, MINESSE TABLET 28'S can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) include nausea, abdominal pain, weight gain, headache, mood changes (including depression and altered libido), nervousness, acne, breast pain, breast tenderness, painful periods, and vaginal infections (including candidiasis). Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people) include vomiting, diarrhea, fluid retention, migraine, decreased libido, breast enlargement, skin rash, and urticaria. Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people) include weight loss, increased libido, contact lens intolerance, jaundice, erythema nodosum (a type of skin inflammation), venous thromboembolism (blood clot in a vein), and arterial thromboembolism (blood clot in an artery). Very rare side effects include erythema multiforme (a severe skin reaction). • If you are less than 12 hours late in taking a pill, the contraceptive protection is not reduced. Take the pill as soon as you remember and then take the following pills again at the usual time.
• If you are more than 12 hours late in taking a pill, the contraceptive protection may be reduced. The more pills you have forgotten, the higher the risk that the contraceptive protection is diminished.
