Common: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and mild stomach upset. Vaginal or oral thrush (fungal infection) can occur. Serious (seek medical attention): signs of an allergic reaction — widespread rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing; severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea (which can occur during or even weeks after treatment and may indicate a serious bowel infection, C. difficile); yellowing of the skin or eyes or dark urine (rare liver effects, which may appear after finishing the course); and unusual bruising or persistent fever. Stop the medicine and contact a doctor if these appear.
Take one tablet twice a day (about every 12 hours), preferably at the start of a meal to reduce stomach upset and improve absorption. Swallow it whole with water. Space the doses evenly and take it at the same times each day.
Yes. Complete the full prescribed course even if you feel better within a few days. Stopping early can let the infection return and encourages antibiotic resistance.
Mild diarrhoea is a common side effect that usually settles after the course. Stay hydrated. However, if the diarrhoea is severe, watery, or bloody, or comes with fever or stomach cramps, contact your doctor promptly and do not take anti-diarrhoea medicines on your own.
Do not take it if you are allergic to penicillins or have had a previous serious reaction to amoxicillin/clavulanate, or if you have had jaundice or liver problems with this antibiotic before. Tell your doctor about any allergies, kidney or liver problems, and all other medicines you take.
It's best avoided while unwell as it can worsen side effects. Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners (like warfarin), the gout medicine allopurinol, or other antibiotics, and note it may reduce the reliability of oral contraceptives — use extra precautions if this concerns you.
