How NS INJECTION 100 ML Works

• Sodium and chloride are the main salts in the fluid outside the body's cells. When normal saline is infused, the water and salt stay mainly in the bloodstream and the fluid around the cells, rather than moving into the cells. This restores circulating fluid volume and salt levels in dehydration and sodium loss.
• Because it matches the body's own salt concentration, it is also used to dilute many injectable medicines so they can be given safely into a vein.

Pain, redness or swelling can occur where the drip enters the vein, and fever or chills can occur with an infusion. Too much normal saline, or giving it too fast, can overload the body with fluid and salt. This causes swelling of the legs, raised blood pressure, breathlessness and, in heart or kidney failure, fluid on the lungs. Large volumes can make the blood more acidic (hyperchloraemic acidosis) and upset potassium and sodium levels. Low blood sodium can develop in some patients, and in severe cases can cause brain swelling with headache, nausea, confusion or fits. Children, women of childbearing age and people with brain conditions are at particular risk. Any breathlessness, swelling, confusion or pain at the drip site during an infusion should be reported to the nurse or doctor straight away.

• Store the container below 30°C, and follow the storage instruction printed on the current pack. Keep it out of the reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date or if the solution is cloudy or the container is damaged.

• It is given only by a doctor or nurse into a vein
• Tell the medical team about heart, kidney or liver disease
• Report breathlessness, swelling or confusion during an infusion
• Report pain or redness at the drip site
• It is not for drinking or for use in the nose

• No food interactions are expected. People on salt-restricted diets for heart or kidney disease should tell the medical team.
