• Semaglutide mimics the natural gut hormone GLP-1. It prompts the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high, reduces glucagon, and slows stomach emptying — which also increases fullness and reduces appetite, often leading to weight loss. Because insulin release is glucose-dependent, the risk of low blood sugar on its own is low.

Most side effects are digestive and most common when starting or increasing the dose: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, and reduced appetite. If combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar.
