Pause Tablet contains tranexamic acid, an antifibrinolytic medicine that helps prevent the breakdown of blood clots. It is primarily used to reduce or control excessive bleeding, especially heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia). It may also be prescribed for bleeding associated with certain gynaecological conditions, nosebleeds, dental procedures in people with a tendency to bleed, and other situations where the doctor considers it appropriate. It is always used under medical supervision.
During menstruation, the lining of the uterus sheds and bleeding occurs. The body naturally forms small clots to limit this bleeding, but in some women these clots break down too quickly, leading to heavy flow. Pause Tablet (tranexamic acid) blocks the action of plasmin, an enzyme that dissolves fibrin, the main component of blood clots. By slowing down clot breakdown, it stabilises clots in the uterine lining and reduces the amount and duration of menstrual blood loss without affecting hormone levels.
Pause Tablet is neither a painkiller nor a hormonal medicine. It does not contain any hormones and does not act like oral contraceptive pills. It also does not directly relieve pain. Its main action is antifibrinolytic: it helps stabilise blood clots and reduce excessive bleeding. If you have menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea), your doctor may prescribe a separate pain‑relief medicine to be taken along with Pause Tablet if appropriate.
Pause Tablet is not intended to delay or completely stop a normal menstrual cycle. It is prescribed to reduce abnormally heavy bleeding during periods or in specific bleeding conditions. Using it on your own to postpone menstruation or to stop a normal period is not recommended and may mask underlying problems. Any attempt to alter your menstrual cycle should be discussed with a gynaecologist, who may suggest safer and more appropriate options.
Pause Tablet should generally not be used by people with a history of blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or certain types of stroke, unless a specialist clearly advises otherwise. It is usually avoided in patients with active intravascular clotting, certain types of kidney disease with severe impairment, and some eye conditions affecting the retina. People with a known allergy to tranexamic acid or any component of the tablet should not take it. It should also be used cautiously in those with a strong family history of clotting disorders or those taking other medicines that increase clot risk.
Use of Pause Tablet during pregnancy is not routine and should only occur if a doctor judges that the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Tranexamic acid has been used in certain pregnancy‑related bleeding conditions in hospital settings, but this is highly specialised care. Pregnant women should never start Pause Tablet on their own for vaginal bleeding, as bleeding in pregnancy can signal serious problems such as miscarriage, placental issues, or preterm labour. Immediate medical assessment is essential in any pregnancy‑related bleeding.
Tranexamic acid passes into breast milk in small amounts. Available data suggest that short‑term use at usual therapeutic doses is unlikely to harm a healthy, full‑term breastfed infant, but evidence is limited. Therefore, Pause Tablet should be used during breastfeeding only when clearly needed and on the advice of a doctor. The infant should be monitored for any unusual symptoms such as poor feeding, vomiting, or rash, and medical advice should be sought if concerns arise.
Common side effects of Pause Tablet include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort or pain, indigestion, headache, back pain, muscle or joint pain, and fatigue. These are usually mild and temporary. Less commonly, dizziness or visual disturbances may occur. Very rarely, serious side effects such as allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing) or blood clots in the legs, lungs, or brain can develop. Any sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, weakness on one side of the body, or vision changes require urgent medical attention.
There is no strong evidence of a direct interaction between tranexamic acid and moderate alcohol intake. However, alcohol can worsen dizziness, headache, or stomach upset, which are possible side effects of Pause Tablet. Heavy alcohol use can also affect overall health and may complicate the management of bleeding disorders. It is advisable to limit or avoid alcohol while taking Pause Tablet, especially if you feel unwell, and to follow your doctor’s specific recommendations.
Pause Tablet does not affect ovulation or long‑term fertility and is not a contraceptive. It does not prevent pregnancy and should not be relied upon for birth control. Women who do not wish to become pregnant should use an appropriate contraceptive method while taking Pause Tablet, as advised by their healthcare provider. If you are trying to conceive and have heavy periods, your doctor can help balance the management of bleeding with your fertility goals.
Pause Tablet may interact with other medicines that influence blood clotting. Combined hormonal contraceptives (containing oestrogen and progestogen) already carry a small increased risk of blood clots. Using them together with tranexamic acid may further increase this risk in some individuals, particularly those with additional risk factors such as obesity, smoking, or a history of thrombosis. Pause Tablet is generally not used together with systemic blood thinners (anticoagulants) without specialist supervision, as their actions oppose each other and may complicate treatment. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking before starting Pause Tablet.
