Pedicloryl is an oral solution containing chloral hydrate, a sedative–hypnotic medicine. It is primarily used in children to produce short‑term sedation or sleep, for example before diagnostic procedures (such as imaging or certain tests), minor interventions, or occasionally for short‑term management of severe insomnia under specialist supervision. It is not a general sleep aid for routine use and should only be given when prescribed by a doctor.
Chloral hydrate in Pedicloryl is converted in the body to trichloroethanol, which enhances inhibitory signalling in the central nervous system. This leads to depression of brain activity, causing drowsiness, reduced anxiety, and facilitation of sleep. The effect usually begins within a relatively short period after oral administration and lasts for a few hours, depending on the dose, the child’s age, and individual metabolism.
Pedicloryl can be used safely in many children when prescribed and monitored by an experienced clinician, but it is not suitable for everyone. Caution or avoidance is required in children with liver or kidney impairment, significant heart disease, respiratory disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea or chronic lung disease, a history of substance misuse, or known hypersensitivity to chloral hydrate or related compounds. The doctor will weigh the benefits against the risks before prescribing and will adjust the regimen or choose an alternative if necessary.
No. Pedicloryl must not be used without a valid prescription and clear instructions from a doctor. It is a potent sedative with potential for serious side effects, including breathing problems, heart rhythm disturbances, and dependence with inappropriate use. Insomnia in children often has behavioural or medical causes that require proper assessment. Giving Pedicloryl on your own, or using a previous prescription without review, can be dangerous and is strongly discouraged.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, unsteady movements, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and sometimes irritability or paradoxical agitation instead of sedation. Some children may experience confusion or nightmares. These effects are usually short‑lived and resolve as the medicine wears off. However, if side effects are severe, persistent, or worrying, you should contact the prescribing doctor for advice.
Serious adverse effects, though less common, require urgent medical attention. These include difficulty breathing or slow, shallow breathing; bluish lips or fingertips; extreme drowsiness or inability to wake the child; irregular or very slow heartbeat; fainting; severe vomiting; seizures; or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or sudden difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, seek emergency care immediately and inform healthcare providers that the child has received chloral hydrate.
Pedicloryl is not recommended for long‑term or chronic treatment of insomnia in children. Prolonged or repeated use can lead to tolerance (reduced effect over time), dependence, and withdrawal symptoms if the medicine is stopped abruptly. Long‑term use also increases the risk of organ toxicity and behavioural changes. Management of chronic sleep problems should focus on identifying underlying causes and implementing behavioural and environmental strategies, with medicines reserved for specific, time‑limited indications under specialist care.
If you suspect that your child has received more Pedicloryl than prescribed, or if another child has accidentally ingested the solution, seek immediate medical attention, even if the child appears well. Overdose can cause profound drowsiness, loss of consciousness, respiratory depression, low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and potentially life‑threatening complications. Take the medicine bottle and any remaining solution with you to the healthcare facility so that the exact product and strength can be identified.
Yes. Pedicloryl can interact with other medicines that depress the central nervous system, such as sedating antihistamines, benzodiazepines, some antiepileptic drugs, opioids, certain antidepressants, and other sleep or anxiety medicines. Combined use can increase the risk of excessive sedation, breathing problems, and impaired cardiovascular function. It may also interact with medicines that affect liver enzymes. Always inform the prescribing doctor and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over‑the‑counter products, and herbal supplements your child is taking before Pedicloryl is started.
Pedicloryl should be stored in its original container, tightly closed, at the temperature range specified on the label, and protected from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Keep it out of sight and reach of children to prevent accidental ingestion. Use only an appropriate measuring device, such as an oral syringe or medicine cup, to measure the prescribed volume accurately. Do not use household spoons. Do not use the solution after the expiry date or beyond any in‑use period indicated by your pharmacist. Return unused or expired medicine to a pharmacy for safe disposal rather than discarding it in household waste or wastewater.
