How PHENERGAN SYRUP 100 ML Works

• Promethazine blocks H1 histamine receptors in the nose, eyes and skin, reducing sneezing, runny nose, itching and hives. It also crosses into the brain, where it blocks histamine and other receptors involved in wakefulness and in the vomiting centre. This is why it causes drowsiness and reduces nausea and motion sickness.
• It also has anticholinergic effects, which cause dry mouth and blurred vision. Its effect can last up to 12 hours.

Drowsiness is common and can last into the next day. Dizziness, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, difficulty passing urine and sensitivity of the skin to sunlight can also occur. Children may instead become restless, overactive or agitated, and may have nightmares or hallucinations. Rare but serious effects include slowed or shallow breathing, abnormal movements or muscle spasms of the face and neck, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, jaundice and low blood counts. Allergic reactions with rash, hives or swelling can also occur. Breathing difficulty, unusual stiffness or twisting movements, fainting or yellowing of the skin need urgent medical attention.

• Store the bottle in its carton, protected from light, in a cool place, and follow the storage instruction printed on the current Abbott pack. Keep it out of the reach of children, and do not use it after the expiry date.

• Never give it to a child under 2 years of age
• Measure each dose with the device provided
• Avoid alcohol and other sedating medicines
• Do not drive if drowsy or if vision is blurred
• Use sun protection
• See a doctor if symptoms last more than 7 days

• No specific food interaction is known. Alcohol must be avoided, as it greatly increases drowsiness.
