Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

Heart and Fluid Retention
Use with caution / may be contraindicatedPioglitazone can cause fluid retention, which may lead to or exacerbate heart failure, particularly in patients with pre-existing cardiac dysfunction.
PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S commonly causes weight gain which may be dose-related. The reason for this weight gain could be fat accumulation. However, in heart failure patients it could be due to water retention in the body. Therefore, it is important to monitor weight in heart failure cases.
PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S can cause fluid retention which may aggravate or speed up heart failure. The doctor usually starts with the lowest available dose and increases the dose gradually while treating patients who have at least one risk factor for heart failure (previous heart attack, coronary artery disease, elderly). Heart failure is more common when PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S is used with insulin.
Yes, PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S can be used with metformin where sufficient blood sugar management was not possible with metformin alone. This combination of medicines can be used in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and overweight patients with poor blood sugar control.
It is usually prescribed once daily and can be taken at any time of the day but preferably at the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food. You should take PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Continue taking PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S as long as your doctor recommends taking it. Treatment for diabetes mellitus is long-term so you may have to take it lifelong. However, if you have to stop it then consult with your doctor who will suggest an alternative. Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor as it may cause blood sugar levels to rise, which could be harmful to you.
Yes, PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S may cause an increase in liver enzymes, and treatment with PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S should be stopped if liver enzymes increase. Hence, levels of liver enzymes should be periodically checked while on treatment with this medicine. PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S should not be prescribed to patients with liver disease.
PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S belongs to the thiazolidinediones class of anti-diabetic medicines. It helps control blood sugar levels by improving how your body uses a hormone called insulin. This is done by helping your cells become more sensitive to the insulin your body makes.
PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S may increase the risk of bladder cancer, though it is very rare. Immediately consult your doctor if you experience blood in your urine, pain when urinating or a sudden need to urinate, during treatment with this medicine. PIONORM 15 TABLET 15'S should not be used in patients with a prior history of bladder cancer or having bladder cancer.
Pionorm 15 contains pioglitazone 15 mg and is used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps improve blood glucose control by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Pioglitazone, the active ingredient in Pionorm 15, is a thiazolidinedione that activates PPAR-γ receptors in adipose tissue, muscle, and liver. This activation enhances insulin sensitivity, reduces hepatic glucose production, and promotes better uptake of glucose into peripheral tissues, leading to lower blood glucose levels over time.
Pionorm 15 may be used as monotherapy in some adults with type 2 diabetes, particularly when metformin is not tolerated or contraindicated. However, it is often used in combination with other antidiabetic medicines such as metformin, sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors, or insulin, depending on individual clinical requirements and physician assessment.
Common side effects of Pionorm 15 include weight gain, peripheral edema (swelling of the ankles or feet), headache, mild anemia, and musculoskeletal pain. Some patients may also experience upper respiratory tract symptoms. If swelling, shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or visual changes occur, medical advice should be sought promptly.
When used alone, Pionorm 15 has a relatively low risk of causing hypoglycaemia because it does not increase insulin secretion. However, the risk of low blood sugar can increase when it is used together with other agents that can cause hypoglycaemia, such as sulfonylureas or insulin. Patients should be educated about symptoms of hypoglycaemia and how to manage them.
Pionorm 15 is generally contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe heart failure (particularly New York Heart Association class III or IV), active liver disease or significantly elevated liver enzymes, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to pioglitazone or any component of the formulation. It is usually avoided in patients with active bladder cancer and used cautiously in those with a history of bladder tumors.
Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention and may precipitate or worsen heart failure, especially in patients with pre-existing cardiac dysfunction. Pionorm 15 should be used with caution in patients with a history of heart failure or significant cardiovascular disease, and is generally avoided in moderate to severe heart failure. Any new or worsening shortness of breath, swelling, or rapid weight gain should be reported immediately.
Data on the use of pioglitazone in pregnancy are limited. Because of potential risks to the fetus and the availability of alternative treatments with more established safety profiles in pregnancy, Pionorm 15 is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy. Women with diabetes who are pregnant or planning pregnancy should consult their doctor to adjust their treatment regimen appropriately.
Pioglitazone has been associated with rare cases of liver dysfunction. Baseline liver function tests are usually recommended before starting therapy, and periodic monitoring may be advised. Pionorm 15 should not be used in patients with active liver disease or significantly elevated liver enzymes. Symptoms such as unexplained nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, dark urine, or jaundice should prompt immediate medical evaluation.
Yes, weight gain and peripheral edema are recognized adverse effects of Pionorm 15. Weight gain may be related to fluid retention and changes in fat distribution. Swelling of the ankles or feet can occur and may be more pronounced when Pionorm 15 is used with insulin. Persistent or severe swelling, especially if associated with shortness of breath, should be assessed by a healthcare professional.
Pioglitazone is not primarily eliminated by the kidneys, and it can be used in many patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. However, patients with kidney disease may be more prone to fluid retention and heart failure, so careful monitoring is required. In advanced renal disease, overall diabetes management should be individualized by a specialist, and the risks and benefits of Pionorm 15 should be evaluated.
Moderate alcohol intake may be permissible for some patients, but alcohol can affect blood glucose control and may increase the risk of liver problems. Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided. Patients should discuss their alcohol use with their healthcare provider so that individualized advice can be given based on liver function, concomitant medications, and overall health status.
