Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them.

General precautions
Medical supervision advisedRedotil is intended for short-term use in acute diarrhea and should not be used for prolonged periods without medical review.
No interactions with other medicine have been described in humans.
REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S works by reducing the secretion of water and electrolytes from the intestine. This helps to reduce the amount of fluid loss from the body in diarrhoea.
REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S does not affect motility as compared to Loperamide. It means less chance of developing rebound constipation.
Take REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S only for a duration as advised by your doctor. It is also suggested to be taken until your child has two normal stools, not exceeding 7 days. Please consult your doctor for any further information.
REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S is a medicine which rapidly inhibits excessive intestinal secretion without causing constipation and without any central effect.
REDOTIL CAPSULE 15'S is not an over the counter medicine. It is a prescription medicine and is available only when prescribed by registered medical practitioner.
Yes, it helps to reduce the stool output.
It should always be used together with oral rehydration therapy (ORS).
Redotil is a brand of antidiarrheal medicine whose active ingredient is racecadotril. Racecadotril is an intestinal antisecretory agent that reduces the excessive secretion of water and electrolytes into the gut, thereby helping to decrease the volume and frequency of stools in acute diarrhea. It does not primarily work by slowing bowel movements but by acting on the secretory component of diarrhea.
Redotil is typically prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of acute watery diarrhea in adults and, in some countries, in children above a defined age. It is used when there is no suspicion of invasive bacterial infection or severe systemic illness. It is intended as an add-on to oral rehydration therapy and, when necessary, specific treatment of the underlying cause such as antibiotics for confirmed bacterial infections. It is not generally used for chronic diarrhea, diarrhea with blood or high fever, or diarrhea due to antibiotic-associated colitis unless a doctor specifically recommends it.
Redotil contains racecadotril, which is a prodrug converted in the body to an active metabolite that inhibits the enzyme enkephalinase in the intestinal epithelium. Enkephalinase normally breaks down endogenous enkephalins, which help regulate intestinal secretion. By inhibiting this enzyme, racecadotril prolongs the action of enkephalins, leading to reduced hypersecretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen. This mechanism decreases stool volume and fluid loss without significantly affecting intestinal transit time.
Redotil does not usually stop diarrhea instantly. Its effect begins after absorption and conversion to the active metabolite, and clinical improvement is typically seen within several hours, with progressive reduction in stool frequency and volume over the next one to two days. The exact onset and degree of response vary between individuals and depend on the cause and severity of diarrhea, as well as concurrent measures such as adequate rehydration.
Use of Redotil in children depends on the child’s age, local regulatory approvals, and the specific product formulation. In many regions, racecadotril is approved for acute diarrhea in children above a certain age or weight, often in pediatric formulations such as sachets. However, dosing and age limits differ between countries and brands. Parents or caregivers should not give Redotil to a child without consulting a pediatrician and following the exact instructions on the product label or prescription.
Redotil is generally well tolerated, but some people may experience side effects. Commonly reported adverse effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sometimes constipation or flatulence. Mild skin reactions such as rash or itching can occur. Rarely, more serious hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema or severe skin eruptions, have been reported. Any sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing requires immediate discontinuation of the medicine and urgent medical attention.
Redotil should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to racecadotril or any component of the formulation. It is generally avoided in patients with chronic diarrhea, diarrhea associated with blood or pus in stools, high fever, or suspected invasive bacterial infection unless a doctor specifically advises its use. Caution or avoidance is also recommended in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, and in very young children or infants, depending on local guidelines. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use it only if clearly needed and after medical evaluation.
Yes. Redotil is intended as an adjunct to, not a replacement for, oral rehydration therapy. Patients with diarrhea should continue to drink adequate fluids, preferably oral rehydration solutions containing appropriate amounts of salts and glucose, to prevent or correct dehydration. The combination of Redotil to reduce intestinal fluid loss and oral rehydration to replace lost fluids and electrolytes is a standard approach in the management of acute watery diarrhea.
Redotil is not an antibiotic and does not directly treat infectious agents such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites. It acts on the intestinal mucosa to reduce fluid secretion and thereby controls the symptoms of diarrhea. If diarrhea is due to a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics, or due to another specific cause, appropriate causal treatment must be prescribed separately by a healthcare professional. Redotil should not be used as a substitute for indicated antimicrobial or other disease-specific therapy.
You should seek urgent medical care and stop taking Redotil if you develop blood or black tarry stools, high fever, severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal distension, or signs of severe dehydration such as very little urine, intense thirst, confusion, or dizziness on standing. You should also stop the medicine and get immediate help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, including rash with blistering, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Persistent diarrhea beyond a few days despite treatment also requires medical reassessment.
The combined use of Redotil with other antidiarrheal agents like loperamide is generally not recommended without medical supervision. Both medicines act on diarrhea through different mechanisms, and combining them may not provide additional benefit and could increase the risk of adverse effects, such as constipation or masking of worsening underlying disease. A healthcare professional should decide whether a single agent is sufficient or if any combination is appropriate in a specific clinical situation.
