Most side effects are temporary and resolve as your body adapts to the medication. If side effects persist or cause concern, seek medical advice.

General precautions and other conditions
Medical supervision requiredSemi Amaryl 0.5 should be taken only on medical prescription as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan including diet and exercise.
The recommended starting dose of SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S is 1 mg or 2 mg once daily, administered with breakfast. If you are at a higher risk of low blood sugar (e.g., the elderly or patients with renal impairment), you will be given a starting dose of 1 mg once daily. The usual maintenance dose is 1–4 mg once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 8 mg once daily. After reaching a daily dose of 2 mg, the dosage will be increased not more than 2 mg at 1- to 2-week intervals, based on your blood glucose level.
SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S itself does not cause sleepiness. However, it may cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used with other anti-diabetes medicine. Because of this you may feel sleepy or have problems in sleeping.
SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S does not affect kidneys in patients with normal kidney function. However, its use should be avoided in patients with severe kidney disease since SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S is principally eliminated by the kidneys.
No, it is not known that SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S causes memory loss. However, the use of SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S may cause low blood sugar which may cause problems with concentration and reduced alertness.
SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S should be avoided by patients who are allergic to it, have severe kidney or liver disease, have G6PD-deficiency (an inherited condition affecting red blood cells) or are due to have surgery. Additionally, patients who are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1 diabetes mellitus) should avoid taking SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S.
SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S takes about 2 to 3 hours to reduce blood sugar levels. You may not feel any difference, but this does not mean the medicine is not working. Continue taking the medication as directed by your doctor and if you have any concerns, discuss it with your doctor.
Usually, the treatment for diabetes is suggested for a long term. You may have to continue the treatment life long. SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S only controls the sugar levels but does not cure it. Do not stop taking SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S suddenly your diabetes may get worse.
SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S should be taken strictly as advised by the doctor. Overdose of SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S may significantly decrease your blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). If you think you have taken an excess dose and experience a dip in your sugar level, consume enough sugar (e.g., a small bar of sugar cubes, sweet juice or sweetened tea) and inform a doctor immediately. Severe cases of hypoglycemia accompanied by loss of consciousness and coma require immediate medical treatment and admission into hospital.
No. Taking SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S on an empty stomach can cause your blood sugar levels to become too low. Low blood sugar can cause dizziness, shaking, anxiety, irritability, a fast heartbeat, and confusion. Therefore, you should always take the medicine with breakfast or the first meal of the day. If you are skipping your meal, then you should also avoid taking SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S.
Yes, SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S can cause weight gain. SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S is a sulfonylurea drug and causes the pancreas to release insulin. It may stimulate hunger and cause mild weight gain in some people. Patients are advised to eat a healthy balanced diet and exercise regularly to keep their weight stable.
Yes, SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S can cause dizziness as a side effect. If this happens to you, sit or lie down until the symptoms pass. Always carry some sugary food or fruit juice with you in case you experience dizziness while travelling.
It is advisable to avoid foods that are high in saturated and trans fats, instead consume fats from fish and nuts. Control your carbohydrate intake as this directly affects your blood sugar.
Yes, SEMI AMARYL 0.5MG TABLET 30'S tablet is safe when used as directed by the doctor. However, it may show some side effects. For best results, it should be used in the correct dose and at the same time each day.
Yes, people with diabetes must include proteins along with other essential nutrients in their daily diet. Proteins are one of the major energy providers among all essential nutrients. Besides, being the building blocks of the human body, proteins break down into glucose to release energy. Unlike carbohydrates, the metabolism of proteins into glucose is much slower. Therefore, the release of energy usually takes a few hours after consumption. Thus, the spike in blood sugar levels might occur after a few hours when you are on a high-protein diet.
No, artificial sweeteners are not good for people with diabetes. They are composed of chemicals that can cause mild to severe side effects. Thus, it is better to limit or avoid their use as much as you can.
Yes, uncontrolled diabetes can cause kidney failure. In the long run, diabetes can affect the kidneys leading to a condition called diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy is a condition that is a major cause of kidney failure in patients with diabetes. The best way to prevent damage to kidneys is by keeping diabetes in check, making dietary changes, monitoring sugar levels regularly, getting routine blood tests done, and taking prescribed medications on time.
Diabetes is a condition that causes changes in your blood glucose levels, which if left uncontrolled, can lead to serious health complications affecting the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes. However, with simple lifestyle changes, diet, and medications, one can manage their condition and lead a healthy life.
Semi Amaryl 0.5, containing glimepiride 0.5 mg, is used to help control blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is prescribed when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone do not provide adequate glycaemic control. It is not suitable for type 1 diabetes or for treating diabetic ketoacidosis.
Semi Amaryl 0.5 works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin. Glimepiride binds to receptors on pancreatic beta cells, leading to increased insulin secretion, which helps lower blood glucose levels. Its effect depends partly on the presence of glucose, but it can still cause low blood sugar if food intake is insufficient or if physical activity is increased without adjustment.
No, Semi Amaryl 0.5 is not indicated for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by an almost complete lack of insulin production, and treatment requires insulin therapy. Sulfonylureas like glimepiride rely on functioning pancreatic beta cells and are therefore ineffective and inappropriate in type 1 diabetes and in diabetic ketoacidosis.
The most common side effect is hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), which may present with sweating, shakiness, hunger, palpitations, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, irritability, or confusion. Other possible side effects include mild weight gain, nausea, abdominal discomfort, and, less commonly, skin reactions such as rash or itching. Severe or persistent symptoms should be reported to a doctor.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is not too close to the time of your next scheduled dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this increases the risk of hypoglycaemia. If you are unsure, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Yes, Semi Amaryl 0.5 can cause hypoglycaemia, particularly if you skip or delay meals, eat less than usual, drink alcohol, perform intense exercise without adjusting food intake, or use it together with other glucose-lowering medicines such as insulin. Patients should be trained to recognise early signs of low blood sugar and to treat it promptly with fast-acting carbohydrates, and should seek urgent care if symptoms are severe or do not improve.
Glimepiride is cleared partly through the kidneys and metabolised in the liver, so patients with kidney or liver impairment may be at higher risk of prolonged hypoglycaemia and other adverse effects. Use in such patients requires careful assessment, possible dose adjustment, and close monitoring by a doctor. In moderate to severe impairment, alternative therapies may be preferred. Patients should not start or continue this medicine without medical supervision if they have significant kidney or liver disease.
Use of glimepiride during pregnancy is generally not recommended because safety data are limited and there is a risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia if used near delivery. Insulin is usually the preferred treatment for managing diabetes in pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or who become pregnant while taking Semi Amaryl 0.5 should consult their doctor promptly to review and adjust their treatment plan.
Alcohol can unpredictably affect blood glucose levels and may increase the risk of both hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia when taken with glimepiride. It can also mask some warning symptoms of low blood sugar. Regular or heavy alcohol consumption is discouraged. If you drink alcohol, do so only in moderation and with food, and discuss this with your doctor to understand the risks in your specific case.
Weight gain can occur with sulfonylureas, including glimepiride, because increased insulin levels promote glucose uptake and storage. The degree of weight gain varies between individuals and can often be mitigated by following a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity as advised by your healthcare provider. Any unexpected or rapid weight changes should be discussed with your doctor.
Semi Amaryl 0.5 is often used in combination with other antidiabetic medicines such as metformin and, in some cases, insulin or other oral agents. Combination therapy can improve glycaemic control but also increases the risk of hypoglycaemia. Any combination must be prescribed and supervised by a doctor, who will determine appropriate regimens and monitor for side effects and blood glucose trends.
Patients using Semi Amaryl 0.5 should have regular monitoring of fasting and post-meal blood glucose, and periodic HbA1c to assess long-term control. Kidney and liver function tests may be performed periodically, especially in older adults or those with pre-existing organ impairment. Blood pressure, weight, and lipid profile are also commonly monitored as part of comprehensive diabetes care. Any unusual symptoms or episodes of severe hypoglycaemia should be reported promptly.
