Concomitant medicines and serotonin-related risk

Starizo 200 mg is an antibacterial medicine that contains tedizolid phosphate 200 mg as its active ingredient. Tedizolid belongs to the oxazolidinone class of antibiotics and is used primarily for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) caused by susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is available only on prescription and should be used under medical supervision.
Starizo 200 mg is generally prescribed for acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, such as cellulitis, wound infections, and major skin abscesses, when these are caused by susceptible Gram-positive organisms. The decision to use Starizo 200 mg is based on clinical assessment, local antimicrobial resistance patterns, and, where available, microbiological culture and sensitivity results. It should not be used for viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
The exact dose, frequency, and duration of Starizo 200 mg therapy must be determined by your doctor based on your specific infection and overall health status. You should follow the instructions on the prescription label and any guidance provided by your healthcare professional. Do not change the dose, do not stop treatment early, and do not extend the course without consulting your doctor. Swallow the tablet with water and follow any food-related instructions given by your prescriber or pharmacist.
If you miss a dose of Starizo 200 mg, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects. If you are unsure what to do, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Possible side effects of Starizo 200 mg (tedizolid) may include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, and changes in laboratory tests such as liver enzymes or blood counts. Less commonly, it may cause myelosuppression (including low platelet counts), peripheral or optic neuropathy, or hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling. Severe or persistent diarrhea, signs of bleeding or bruising, visual changes, or breathing difficulty require immediate medical attention. Not everyone will experience side effects, but monitoring is important, especially with prolonged therapy.
Data on the use of tedizolid in pregnant women are limited. Therefore, Starizo 200 mg should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as assessed by the treating physician. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant, you should inform your doctor before starting this medicine. Your doctor will consider alternative treatments and decide whether Starizo 200 mg is appropriate for you.
There is insufficient information about the excretion of tedizolid into human breast milk and its effects on the breastfed infant. As a precaution, your doctor may advise either discontinuing breastfeeding or avoiding Starizo 200 mg, taking into account the importance of the medicine to the mother. If treatment with Starizo 200 mg is considered essential, your healthcare provider will discuss the potential risks and may recommend monitoring the infant for gastrointestinal disturbances or other adverse effects.
Tedizolid has weaker monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory activity than linezolid, but potential interactions with serotonergic or adrenergic agents cannot be completely excluded. Caution is advised when Starizo 200 mg is used with antidepressants (such as SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants), certain migraine medicines (triptans), opioids like tramadol, and sympathomimetic agents. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking so they can assess the risk of interactions and adjust therapy if needed.
There is no well-established, specific interaction between tedizolid and moderate alcohol consumption. However, both alcohol and antibiotics can cause side effects such as dizziness, headache, and gastrointestinal upset. Alcohol may also impair immune function and recovery from infection. It is generally advisable to limit or avoid alcohol while being treated with Starizo 200 mg. If you choose to drink, discuss this with your doctor, especially if you have liver disease or are taking other medicines that affect the liver or central nervous system.
Patients with pre-existing liver or kidney impairment should inform their doctor before starting Starizo 200 mg. Tedizolid is metabolized and eliminated through both hepatic and non-renal pathways, and although standard references suggest that dose adjustments may not always be necessary in mild to moderate impairment, the decision must be individualized by the treating physician. In such patients, closer clinical and laboratory monitoring may be recommended to detect potential toxicity early. Do not use this medicine without medical advice if you have significant hepatic or renal disease.
Starizo 200 mg should be used only for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria susceptible to tedizolid. Unnecessary or inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, making future infections harder to treat. To help prevent resistance, take the medicine exactly as prescribed, do not skip doses, do not stop early unless advised by your doctor, and do not share your antibiotic with others. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen during treatment, contact your healthcare provider for reassessment.
