• Ambroxol breaks up the structure of thick mucus and increases the movement of the cilia, the fine hair-like structures lining the airway that sweep mucus upward.
• Guaifenesin increases the volume and reduces the stickiness of airway secretions, so the mucus becomes easier to move.
• Terbutaline acts on beta-2 receptors in the muscle wrapped around the airways. Stimulating those receptors relaxes the muscle and the airway widens, which eases wheezing and gives the loosened mucus a clearer route out.

The effects patients notice soonest usually come from the terbutaline. A fine tremor in the hands, a fast or pounding heartbeat, restlessness and headache appear within a short time of a dose and tend to ease as the body adjusts.
