How VASOGRAIN EC TABLET 20'S Works

• During a migraine attack, blood vessels around the brain widen and inflammatory signals are released. Ergotamine narrows those widened vessels and damps down the release of those signals, which reduces the throbbing pain.
• Caffeine has a mild narrowing effect of its own and improves how much ergotamine and paracetamol the gut absorbs. Paracetamol blocks the production of chemicals involved in pain signalling. Prochlorperazine blocks dopamine receptors in the part of the brain that triggers vomiting, which settles the nausea that accompanies many attacks.

Ergotamine has a narrow margin between a helpful amount and a harmful one, and the most serious effects come from blood vessels narrowing too much anywhere in the body. Pain, coldness, paleness or a bluish colour in the fingers or toes, severe leg pain on walking, chest pain, breathlessness, sudden weakness or confusion all need emergency medical attention and the tablet stopped. This pattern is known as ergotism. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness and tingling or numbness in the fingers and toes are the effects reported most often, and they tend to be related to how much has been taken. Prochlorperazine can cause drowsiness and, less often, restlessness or unusual stiffness and movements of the face and limbs, which should be reported to the doctor. Taking the tablet on more days than the prescriber allows can lead to medication-overuse headache, where headaches become more frequent and respond less well to treatment.

• If you miss a dose of Vasograin EC Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

• Store the strip at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Leave the tablets in the original strip until they are taken, so the enteric coating is not damaged.

• Take the tablet at the first sign of an attack, swallowed whole and never crushed or chewed
• Never exceed the number of tablets allowed per attack, per day and per week
• Check that no other medicine being taken contains paracetamol, as the total daily amount matters
• Do not take this tablet with a triptan such as sumatriptan or rizatriptan without the prescriber setting a gap between them
• Tell the doctor about any heart disease, circulation problem, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease before the first dose
• Seek emergency help for cold, pale or painful fingers or toes, chest pain or sudden weakness
• Keep a headache diary and review the pattern with the doctor, as rising use is itself a warning sign

• Taking the tablet with food reduces stomach irritation.
• Coffee, tea, cola and chocolate add to the caffeine already in the tablet, so large amounts are best avoided during an attack.
• Grapefruit and grapefruit juice slow the breakdown of ergotamine and can raise its level in the body, so they should be avoided.
• Alcohol worsens the drowsiness and dizziness and can also trigger migraine in some people.
