Composition
Vildagliptin is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, and cold-like symptoms (nasopharyngitis). Nausea, trembling, or sweating can occur, usually linked to low blood sugar when combined with other medicines.Others: on its own the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is low; it increases if taken with a sulfonylurea or insulin.Serious (seek medical attention): signs of liver problems — yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea, loss of appetite, or unusual tiredness; signs of pancreatitis — severe, persistent stomach pain that may spread to the back, often with vomiting; and severe skin or allergic reactions such as blistering or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Stop the medicine and seek urgent care if these occur.
Take one tablet once a day, at about the same time each day, with or without food, or exactly as your doctor directs. Swallow the sustained-release tablet whole with water — do not crush, split, or chew it, as this can affect the slow release.
Vildagliptin can rarely affect the liver, so doctors usually check liver function before starting, at intervals during the first year, and periodically after. Report any yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent nausea and tiredness promptly.
On its own, the risk is low because it works only when blood sugar is high. The risk increases if you also take a sulfonylurea or insulin. Learn the signs — shakiness, sweating, confusion — and keep a fast sugar source handy.
Take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual — do not take two tablets together.
Yes, your doctor will monitor blood sugar (including HbA1c) and liver function periodically. It is generally not recommended for people with liver problems, and the dose may be adjusted in kidney impairment. Tell your doctor about your medical history and all other medicines you take.
