Composition
Common: digestive effects from voglibose — flatulence (gas), bloating, abdominal discomfort, and loose stools or diarrhoea — which often ease over time. Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) can occur, mainly from repaglinide, especially if a meal is missed or delayed. Others: mild skin rash, headache. Serious (seek medical attention): severe or persistent low blood sugar (sweating, shakiness, confusion, palpitations), signs of an allergic reaction, or — rarely — signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea). Report these promptly.
Take one tablet just before each main meal — typically within about 15 minutes of starting to eat — or exactly as your doctor directs. Swallow it with water. Because it is a mealtime medicine, its timing is closely tied to your meals.
Skip that dose too. Taking the tablet without eating can cause low blood sugar. Likewise, if you add an extra meal, your doctor may advise an extra dose — follow their instructions.
Important: because voglibose slows the breakdown of ordinary table sugar (sucrose), treat low blood sugar with glucose (dextrose) tablets or glucose powder rather than cane sugar or sweets, as glucose works faster. Always carry a glucose source and learn the warning signs — shakiness, sweating, confusion.
This is a common, usually harmless effect of voglibose, caused by unabsorbed carbohydrate reaching the gut. It often improves over a few weeks. Staying hydrated and a balanced diet can help; tell your doctor if it is severe or persistent.
Check your blood sugar as advised and keep up with follow-up tests (including HbA1c) and any liver checks your doctor recommends. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of low blood sugar. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
