How ALEX JUNIOR SYRUP 60 ML Works

• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain and raises the threshold at which the cough reflex fires, so a dry cough is triggered less easily.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is the chemical released during an allergic response, and blocking it eases sneezing, a running nose and itchy, watery eyes. Chlorpheniramine also reaches the brain, which is why it sedates.

Drowsiness is the effect reported most often, and it comes from the chlorpheniramine. Some children become restless or irritable instead of sleepy, which is a recognised reaction rather than a sign the dose was wrong. Effects that need prompt medical attention include difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, hallucinations, unusual sleepiness that is hard to rouse a child from, or a rapid heartbeat. A cough that lasts beyond a week, returns after settling, or arrives with fever, breathing difficulty or a persistent headache needs a doctor rather than a longer course of syrup.

• If you miss a dose of Alex Junior Syrup 60 ml, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

• Store the bottle at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets. The storage instruction printed on the carton of the exact pack should be followed.

• Measure every dose with the cup, dropper or syringe supplied, never a kitchen spoon
• Shake the bottle before each dose
• Ask the doctor before giving this syrup to a young child, as advice restricts cough and cold medicines in the youngest age groups
• Check any other cough or cold product already in use, since many contain the same two ingredients
• Watch for unusual sleepiness or, in some children, restlessness after the first few doses
• Keep the child away from cycling, roads and water while they are drowsy
