How TIXYLIX SYRUP 60 ML Works

• Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre in the brain and raises the threshold at which the cough reflex fires. Fewer signals reach the muscles that produce a cough, which settles a dry, non-productive cough.
• Chlorpheniramine blocks histamine H1 receptors. Histamine is the chemical the body releases during an allergic reaction, and blocking its action eases sneezing, a running nose and itchy, watery eyes. Chlorpheniramine also dries nasal secretions slightly and reaches the brain, which accounts for the sedation patients report.

Most reported effects are mild and settle without treatment. Drowsiness is the effect patients notice most, and in some people it is strong enough to interfere with study, work or driving. Restlessness and irritability are reported more often in children than in adults. Symptoms that need prompt medical attention include rash, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, confusion, hallucinations or a rapid heartbeat.
